Go! Comi has been rather quiet lately and now they're having a big sale selling off their manga cheap. Are they folding? They haven't announced anything yet, but I can't shake the feeling.

I hope not! They're supposed to restart Cantarella soon.

Don't forget we're in the middle of a recession. Everyone seems to be delaying or just missing release dates outright. If you note the one sale, they state the "Big Bargains"-
| Quote: | | Sometimes we get shipments of manga that include less than perfect books. This automatically disqualifies them from being sold with our regular stock, but when it's only a slight rub on the cover or a tiny nick in the corner, it tears our hearts out to throw them away or destroy them (which is what normally happens to imperfect books). So we've decided to open up the BIG BARGAINS section, where we can list imperfect copies for insanely low prices. |
So they're just trying to make a buck off what I assume most just throw out. (Maybe they sell them-I have no idea)
On the other hand, I mostly shop TRSI sales with their "Got Anime" discount so I usually get $10 manga for $6 and free shipping so that sale at the Go Comi site isn't all that amazing. Offering volumes for $5 is probably at least their break-even point or maybe a slim profit. And if the buyer likes the series, they'll keep buying it at the higher price so $15 for 07 when there's about 9 volumes in print or scheduled fore print, it's a good gamble.
I mean, TRSI isn't selling stuff for free--that $6 price they can sell manga for means they are making something so if one cuts the store out, $5 sounds about right for the publisher. The dealer in the valley insists TRSI can't be making money off that price (but the sales are most likely in cahoots with the publisher-they grant TRSI a discount & TRSI moves a bunch of product for them)

Could be wrong but.... A couple months or so ago they mentioned that they may have to get rid of the forums.
Which, I never completely understood...
They could pull a DramaQueen and suddenly pop back up to life after a long time underground plotting how.

Having the forums down is a bad sign, but their website is still up. I imagine they could just be retooling things, though their output has been small lately. I imagine something'll pop up sooner or later, Go Comi's generally been pretty open in the past.

Go! Comi did mention that they might be closing down the forums to cut costs. I guess they did.

They were-- er, are one of my favorite manga publishers (I think I & whoever picks the BL titles they license have similar taste, aesthetically). That's awesome. Never say never, I guess. Hopefully Go! Comi can follow suit.

Well, if it helps at all, my library just got in some new Go! Comi copies, so maybe things aren't that dire.
The books were in good shape, so I can't imagine they were purchased through such a deal.

Yup, that is a very bad sign, unless maintenance work is being done. But if there is no note of maintenance being done, it's likely the company either moved domains or just dispersed.

I think it depends on the series and if you want to chance Go! Comi not coming back. While buying series from a hurting company is good, Co! Comi might be...dying or near death. It would take a lot to save that. Their website and news haven't been updated in months and it seems the only series doing well for them is 07-Ghost. I fear they'll end up becoming just like DrMaster.
At this point, I really don't know if Go! Comi can make a comeback. Now, if they do die, I'm sure a few of their series (particularly 07-Ghost) while be picked up by remaining publishers; most likely Yen Press or Tokyopop, but maybe VIZ or Del Rey. What series do you plan on getting?

I love Go!Comi and they may have gone into *chrysalis* stage. I am also worried (as is Purryfur) that they haven't updated their website in about 9 months. They said that they were moving to a smaller, less expensive server that wouldn't have room for the Community areas.
I would say to order. You have a chance of getting what you want that way.

The forum was one thing....
Now the entire Go!Comi website is gone.
Not going to give up on them till there's some sort of official announcement but this.... Just not sure what to say.

I'm pretty much hopeless now. Unless they're switching to a smaller or cheaper server, it seems like they're being erased...They haven't released anything in awhile, either, and their forums went down, so it decreases the chances of that.
I hope 07-Ghost is snatched up quickly, preferably by Yen Press. I wanted to start it, but Go! Comi's state seemed to uncertain at that point. Cantarella seems niche but maybe it has a chance; it seems to have somewhat of a fanbase.
