Toei Animation is offering 200 refurbished episodes of the Sailor Moon Magical Girl anime at the MIPTV market that will be held next week in Cannes. MIPTV is a worldwide content market at which producers such as Toei offer their wares to representatives of TV networks and syndicators of electronic entertainment from more than 100 countries. In addition to the Sailor Moon episodes Toei is also offering the rights to the 243 episodes of the 1980s TV anime Dr. Slump, which is based on the manga series by Dragon Ball-creator Akira Toriyama.

The 200 episodes of Sailor Moon would presumably include all the Sailor Moon TV anime series including the original series (46 episodes), Sailor Moon R (43 episodes), Sailor Moon S (38 episodes), Sailor Moon Super S (39 episodes), and Sailor Moon Stars (34 episodes, the only episodes that have never been available in the U.S.).

ZOMG. This means Dr. Slump and Sailor Moon might finally get licensed :O.

Hopefully FUNimation will license both and release uncut bilingual dvds Smile.

I hope so, I love Dr. Slump. But being it's Toei Company I'm afraid they are going yo stick Arale with a giant robot. Even though she's a robot. (get it? Toei and big robots? No?)

Please guys, better quality Sailor Moon plus Stars? Where do I send the check? This is something I've been waiting patiently for for quite a while, and I only hope Funi follows up on their joke to license SM.

Sailor Moon would get the nostalgia purchases, but I can't see Dr. Slump doing very well, unless Funimation gets it and does what it did to Crayon Shin-chan.

After seeing this, I searched online and found the ending of Sailor Stars. I thought I could endure it... but I cried again. lol

Still really looking forward to this. As in, when I got up this morning, I thought "soon, I will be able to watch Sailor Moon in entirity with good subs for the last season." And then I realized exactly what this means... All those people who never really got into anime but enjoyed Sailor Moon for the American TV release with Serena and Darian are going to be in for a serious culture shock if they pick up Stars from their local distributor. Not sure if this will prove to be a good or bad thing when they decide to share it, without previewing the contents, with their children. I'm specifically referring to spoiler[the Starlight's blatent cross-gender transformations in conjunction with the love themes in the series.] I think it would be pretty funny to watch some 6 year old asking her mommy and daddy about those characters in particular. Razz

STARS?! May my dream finally come true?? If the anime world was a perfect place, I wouldn't have a hardrive full of anime which have never been licensed/released uncut and subbed...

FIRST day purchause!! If it happens... And honestly, I don't care who does it, as long as it IS uncut and has JPN w/subs!

It will be nice to finally upgrade from these fansub tapes I've been sitting on for the last 10 years. It will also be nice to see one of the most influential and successful anime series of the last 20 years back in anime circles.

Uncut Sailormoon S and Stars would still never work on American TV. The cousins angle just doesn't work to develop Nep and Uranus' characters (their romance is a huge part of who they are and in S is a beautiful side story), and there's simply no way to first explain away the Stars' gender bending and why one is in love with Usagi. Plus the show is too light for Adult Swim and Animonday. It will do just fine on DVD.

With all the pro-gay movement, I'm pretty sure now it would get a better chance at that being uncut, than back then when it originally was on TV. Stars however... mmm cross-dressing has only really worked on shows here in a comedic matter, but who knows, maybe it's alright for that now too.

Wow, this is certainly giant news, if this actually pans out though. I heard somewhere that Sailor Moon has been in a licensing bind for the last decade and that the original creator was actually displeased with the American Sailor Moon version.

If this actually does happen and the series is licensed, that is only half the battle for some. Now if a company, for instance Bandai does license the show, they could just leave the series as is and not re dub the series and leave it as is.

Which may satisfy some people, but I am fairly certain a large group of people are displeased with the original English audio. But to re dub the entire series could be very expensive, so even if the series is licensed, the show may not be re dubbed.

As for Doctor Slump, I actually never thought I'd see the day when I would see the anime series in US again. I am pretty sure only a small fraction of anime fans today have even heard of the series, much less read the manga, but I ever the series was done a second time in the 90's.

Yet, but times Doctor Slump aired, both were dubbed in English. Though I am not so sure about the remake (the 90's version) being in English (since I actually only heard about this somewhere years ago), both series lasted several years.

I recently bought the final Doctor Slump manga volume (volume 18) and I look forward to watching the anime. The 80's version was okay, but I hope which ever company licenses the series remasters the series in HD.

This is great news none the less though. Especially Sailor Moon for the fans that have been waiting several years, maybe even a decade.

Yeah, there's been a big pro gay movement in regards to shedding light on gay cultures on Bravo and HBO with shows geared more towards adults. Sailor Moon cut or uncut is geared towards girls and young adults. And any shows that depict that kind of lifestyle, even if in a teen-romancy type of way just aren't safe enough.
Moving past that, CN would be the primary candidate, and SM is certainly not Adult Swim Material. It would work during the day uncut if it wasn't for the gay thing. It's too soft for animonday like I said even though the gay thing could work a little better there. Othewise there just isnt any other channel that would have that kind of audience. The N, maybe? That may be a stretch. It's just too culturally different.

The problem isn't that it's a gay relationship. It's a gay relationship depicted in a show for girls and young adult females, so no matter how you slice it, it's extremely difficult to market here.

Y'know, I watched the show for three years of tracking down fansubs, and I never ONCE could be convinced the Starlights were girls. Ever. I still don't see it.
Really femmy boy-band bishounen, maybe, but girl Sailors wear fukus, not leather George Michael thongs. All I have is Naoko's word to go on, and she's been wrong before. Razz

But if we must follow canon, I can't see anything to argue with those "The dub's going to ruin it!" urban-legends about "girls in disguise" as the Three Lights:
We never see them dating (ahemcough)--except for Seiya's flirting with Usagi, which seems more playful teasing anyway--and it fits in with the whole "secret identity" tone of the series. Give me one example of how it couldn't work.
