Anime is becoming more and more popular each day. It's on the television, there are many conventions and many people know what it is. Anime is becoming more mainstream, do you think this is a good thing?

For the past 7-8 years we've seen an influx in great anime with, Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Trigun, Gundam Wing and Evangelion
Sadly, I see anime losing some fans and simply revolving around a small central fanbase. It's popularity is growing, but I feel anime has run out of ideas. Not much these days seems to really catch my interest. But I'll still hold onto these goodies and treasures of great anime from the past 8 years. Who knows, I have yet to see Samurai Champloo and I heard it's really great, but I'll see. |

Isn't that why most people watch it now? A lot of the fans from past and present watch anime because they think it's cool and fun, not because of the art or quality (and really anyone who thinks anime is the precious stone of the animation world is turning a blind eye to the overwhelming number of flaws and imperfections.) But I digress. Anime in the US is still very much in it's infancy. Even though we see it every day, most people don't even realize it exists. That, of course, is not to be unexpected, but it does go to show just how far it has to go. Will we ever get there? Maybe not, the industry could sit at a stand still from now to eternity, but there's still a lot more room left to expand. Emerje |

I like the fact that anime is becoming more popular. It means more shows and more manga titles, and maybe cheaper prices.

I just look at the last four years for anime in the US, and I smile. There has been a huge in-flux of merchandise, manga, food, culture and the amount of anime we have been getting every year is increasing. Dubs are getting much better, and so are the DVD's in general. Most of all though, we have a lot of vets who are more than willing to help usher in this age.
Even though there are the people that think that anime becoming too popular is a bad thing, there are plenty that are don't feel that way. I think anime may be in its prime right now in the states, but then again it very well may suprise us all and we could see it grow even more. The Anime Network is a huge step in the right direction not only for ADV, but also to set the stage for other companies to follow. These networks may very well be the future of anime in America, and although some may disagree with me, I think having an Anime Network is a very good thing because it will allow anime to become even more mainstream. It will also attract even more fans, and that will keep the industry thriving. I personally feel that future is very bright for us, as anime fans. ~LoneWolf |

Frankly, I see it peaking and then plateauing out in the next ten years....
The current growth hasn't proven itself to be sustainable, at least, not yet. Anime is here to stay, but I don't think it will continue to rise in popularity as it has recently.... |

I know that I was rather shocked when flipping through some fashion magazine and finding an advertisement for manga. I think the title for the page was hottest summer reads or something, and it made me happy. Many people do watch anime only for the action, or the story, which isn't bad, but it would help if people saw how great of art it is as well. Usually I get so annoyed of nudity in movies, but in anime it's different since it's art. You may argue that nudity in movies can be perceived as a form of art, but it really isn't for me. Mainly what I'm trying to say is that a lot of people see it as a fad, but it's much more than that. Honestly, anime is timeless, hopefully it will never die.

Yeah, that's the "Disco Stu Fallacy", that the popularity of something will always rise at the same rate. Mathematical impossibility. There will probably be, every few years or so, one or two cartoon franchises that are Japanese in origin that will be popular with the kiddies, but, yeah, I'm also fairly sure that, at least with adults and older teens, we're already either at the high water mark for popularity or are rapidly approaching it and there will never be a non-children's anime film or show that will be a true crossover hit in North America with more than just the fandom niche, either in theatrical wide release or on network primetime television. I think if there was that much of a domestic market for adult animation in North America outside of a narrow range of TV comedies, the networks and studios would try to cater to that demographic more than a couple of times a decade with meagre ratings and box office results. I really wouldn't care one way or the other if there was an anime oriented towards older audiences that does turn out to be as popular as Friends or Monday Night Football. It wouldn't bother me, but, realistically, I don't think that's ever going to happen. Anime is certainly more popular today with more adults than it was when I first got interested in anime as more than just a passing interest a decade ago, but it would be a mistake to think that most adults are, or would be, into it. It's just that now it's a niche instead of underground. |

Whenever I mention anime to someone, their first reaction is always "you mean like Yu-Gi-Oh and pokemon?"
Yet, once I explain to them the depth and range of anime, they seem interested. Anime is certainly becoming growingly popular here, as I see more and more people picking out stuff from the anime section, despite the fact they were looking for a copy of Signs. They think it looks cool. Although when they pick out Lain as their first title, I usually point them to something a little happier. Anime will certainly rise in popularity. I would say within the next 5 years, there will be at least 1 anime show in a primetime slot on a major network. |

I'm going to bump this thread on August 23rd, 2009, then, and we'll see if that "anime on primetime network television" prediction has come true.
I wouldn't mind it, but I think it's a pipedream. |
