I apologize that the title sounds kinda goofy. Basically what I am asking is do you guys hold off on your anime purchases and just wait for a viridian, anime legends, etc re-release with a much cheaper price tag?
For me I definitely do depending on the show and the company. For example:
Toradora - Heavily enjoyed the series and I purchased the premium boxsets asap to support NIS.
Eden of the East - Loved the show and was very happy it got licensed (although not too surprised). Bought the bluray right away.
But then... here are some examples of when I have not.
Gurren Lagann - The hybrid box sets were rather expensive for me coming out at like $30 or so dollars for 3 sets. I held off on this series until the Anime Legends came out.
Code Geass - Similiar case as to Gurren Lagann. I think on rightstuf their original price for season 1 is like $90 dollars. I'm heavily tempted to buy this right now due to Bandai's sale... but I'm wondering if I should just wait for an AnimeLegends set since I don't "need" this asap. Then again who knows when that maybe o.o.
How about you guys? I know some of you hate viridian/animelegends/ etc boxing , so im sure there are some of you that don't wait. Are there any of you that buy only repackaged shows? Or to a even more extreme, S.A.V.E only?
-Note- I do realize the mentality of holding off for re-released shows at a cheaper price can hurt the market. Be aware though I'm still spending the same amount of money per month on anime, but I may hold off on some more expensive stuff. I just have a hard time buying a series for $90 when I can buy 2-3 series for that price sometimes .

Yeah, I tend to wait.
Ironically one of the last times I didn't wait was Gurren Lagann, bought every one of those suckers in LE, though Best Buys, back when some of them phased out anime, really helped when I got the first set for $25. And I got the rest on sale on TRSI so it didn't cost me an entire organ or anything, just a few pints of blood.
But part of my reason for wanting to wait, other than waiting for price to drop, is that a lot of new stuff gets hype, most of it being unworthy to some degree. When I watch it a while later, I get to enjoy the show with less hype and if it sucked, well I spent less money on it!
So now I'll only tend to buy right away if it's a series I've already seen and liked a lot. If I'm going to blow big bucks, I want to spend it on something I know I'll like, even if it'll be a while before I rewatch it.

I can go either way. At this point, you can usually get a show new for $40-$60 if you shop at the right places. That's not a price I mind paying for a show I'm particularly excited about. If I don't want to pay the extra money though then I can wait. I'm already waiting a while for an R1 release in the first place so it's no big deal.

Depends on the series. I've been trying to buy things right away to support, because I've been wanting to for a while, but with tight money (and having my focus being on buying games) it took a while.
I'm trying to start preordering and buying right away, because first week numbers for a company are VERY important. Usually the first week is when the sales are the strongest they ever will be, so it's good to contribute to those numbers.
For Code Geass, I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for Legends sets to come out... I waited long enough for .hack//Roots, and have just now just decided to go ahead and buy it. Code Geass, however, I bought recently because of a cheap deal on the vol 1 LE. I realized how nice it was, and followed trend with the other LEs.
There are definately series I wait for to go cheaper. Like Vampire Knight. I was not going to buy 3 singles >_> I'm surprised Viz still uses that formula. Boxsets for me!
Others, I'll buy once they get cheaper, since I'm not desperate to get them right away.

I usually only wait for rereleases for Funimation titles, since those happen on a schedule, unlike other companies that seemingly take years to rerelease something *cough*Bandai*cough*. However, I usually buy the first releases since those drop significantly in price (at least at TRSI) once the rerelease comes out. I also wait for seasons to combine so I can buy a whole show at once. I'm holding out on Slayers Revolution and Evolution-R (even though it pains me) since I know eventually they'll come out together.
That said, I won't be doing that anymore. Why? Because Funimation is doing premium packaging. LIMITED FIRST PRESSING ONLY premium packaging. I-I can't resist them, at least not for shows I'm really interested in. Like, I'm getting Sacred Blacksmith, Chrome Shelled Regios and Rideback since those interest me a lot, but I'm not getting Black Butler and Phantom since I'm only mildly interested and can wait. It still pains me that I won't be able to get premium packaging for them unless there's overstock, but it's a sacrifice I have to make to save coin.

Nah. I feel a need to always get the "best" release of a show, and the cheap re-releases usually aren't.

I have bought those cheap rereleases, but since I'm basically a cheap, cheap person with little cash to spend my main tactic is to wait, wait, wait until everyone else has lost interest in a series and then pick it up second-hand.
Of course, sometimes that strategy means that I miss things that have become rare, in which case they can become more expensive rather than less! But it generally means I get things I otherwise wouldn't be able to.
For example, I'm really looking forward to seeing season 2 of Haruhi Suzumiya — maybe in 2015.

I generally try to wait if I can. Like the OP, I snapped up the Toradora! releases because I wanted to support new entrant NISA to the R1 distrib game and I really like the series. It's not clear to me that a cheaper version of Toradora! will ever be available - certainly not on a time line I'd find acceptable.
Like KoH, I find Funi's regularly scheduled discounted re-releases dependable enough that I can generally wait for them. It's tough, sometimes, though. I want Corpse Princess in the worst way, but it seems crazy to shell out $72 (at current TRSI prices) now, when probably a year from now, a cheaper version will be available.
Rightly or wrongly, TRSI has sort of set my expectation for prices. For me, the "regular" price for a 26 episode series is $37.49 and a "good" price is $29.99. Anything lower than that qualifies as a bargain as far as I'm concerned.
Similarly, the regular price for a 13 episode series is $29.99 and a good price is $23.99. I always kind of resent having to pay more than "regular" price for something, but I will do it occasionally.

In virtue of import tax allowances, I'm usually hesitant to consider full series that cannot be purchased either as half-season collections or discounted re-releases. Methods to circumnavigate the risks associated with obtaining premium R1 products are dwindling in number.

I pretty much agree with Blood-'s general principles, and like ailblentyn i get a lot of gently used discs.
its getting to the point where i can imagine i won't be buying that much regularly anymore. i've got only a handful of titles on my backlist at this point now that i've got 3 binders full of discs, a least a quarter of which i haven't watched yet.
there seems to be at least one show a season i'm interested in enough to pick up, but looking at the preview guides there are fewer and fewer things i'm interested in.
probably i'll be making the general switch from my major monthly purchases being anime to manga by early next year, and probably start mixing in more american graphic novels or something.
to support the industry in a small way i'll keep my crunchyroll account for the odd single-shot or unique items (like the various Yasuhiro Yoshiura anime series, and Le Maison de Petit Cubes, etc). if ANN picks up some items like that i'd be interested in plugging in some bucks here too. simulcasts don't mean much to me as i can't watch anything in a timely matter with my family duties anyhow. but good art, even if its just shorts, that'd be awesome.

No, unless I'm kinda on the fence about the title.

Depends, stuff I know I like and excited for like Gundam Unicorn, Eva 2.0, Summer Wars, FMA Brotherhood, etc... I will buy right away regardless of price. Titles I'm iffy over or have not really heard of but look interesting enough I will wait. Good example was Big Windup, was kinda interested in this show when it first came out but not interested enough to just blind buy it, but when they did their SAVE edition for it I happened to throw it in with a Righstuf order as it was only $18 (which BTW I was glad I did as wile Big Windup was ok I dont think it was worth more then what I paid for it).
But yeah for for me it depends on the quality of the title and how much I know about it before hand when I'm ready to place an order or buy stuff.

Yes and no - I don't generally wait for something I definitely want, but the less expensive re-releases have definitely gotten me to try a few I may not have otherwise.

Well in the past I used to buy the single DVDs. With the newer packages that are 1/2 seasons, I do tend to rent before I buy.
With my current budget, I will wait until there is a sale/cheap boxed version.

Yes and no for me too. Like Kruszer, it depends on my thoughts on the series. Timing is sometimes a factor too. I buy a lot of anime but never at one time so I tend to spread out my purchases. Some times the timing works out that if I just wait another month or so, I can get a complete season boxset or half season set. Eureka Seven, Blue Gender, Godannar, Shuffle, and Haruhi season 1 are examples of when this happen off the top of my head. The Mai-hime and Zwei stuff will join this group in the future.
Other stuff I tend to buy as soon as a half season set comes out. Casshern Sin, Toradora, and Eden of the East are recent examples.
But there are series were I will hold off on. Code Geass and Gundam 00 are the main ones. And I'll probably take advantage of Rightstuf's deal on bandai stuff to finally pick up Gundam Seed and Destiny.
