Well this is guaranteed to make their app fail. They should have taken the time and invested the money to roll out several versions of the app, one uncensored and then with varying degrees of censorship for the more restrictive markets. Even if they do that in the future Manga Up! will already have such a bad reputation among fans that that will come too late to save it.

Can't they just remove the breast lines or reduce the breast size because that's how Viz Media handled the localization of the Toshihiro Ono Pokemon manga?

They really did that? That sounds a lot more twisted than just leaving it unmodified. What is wrong with this part of the world?

Objectifying women is bad and they don't want to make women uncomfortable.

A lot of their stuff is available for the first time legally in English here so the only “elsewhere” to go to if you can’t read Japanese is piracy.

Well, that's a given. What did SE expect to happen?

Or rather, to be more accurate in most cases, people will 'continue' to read the series featured on the app 'elsewhere', just like before the app came to be...

What’s stopping them from making certain series web-only like Viz’s Shonen jump service does… It’s also pretty expensive compared to other services… can’t see the service lasting long

Well, perhaps the main reason might be, you know, their lack of webreader/web availability of any kind(aside first chapter) and being app-only...

They managed to take a chunk out of Nozaki of all things . I have to guess beach/pool chapters in general faired extremely poorly with this censorship even if the swimsuits were already modest.

Well, looks like Shimoneta's plot has started to become reality.

What a shame, not censoring Sakura would have been comedic gold.

See it's the slippery slope! First they came for the handholding and now they come after the knees and cleavage. But yea I'm not sure who the target audience would be for this site.

Quote:
The issue stems from the fact that the app is being released worldwide outside of Japan. Instead of different versions of the app being tailored to the differing rules and sensibilities of each country and platform, Manga Up! has only a single version of the app which follows the strictest rules found across all locations and platforms. It's basically the safest way to maximize profits with global marketing.

Proof once again that global distribution was a mistake -- if there's a market for the content in the super-strict countries and regions, we need companies in those regions doing the distribution and applying the appropriate levels of censorship.

Square-Enix's ethics department has struck again, it seems. I do not know which group or individual or ideology is responsible for this, but I can say instances like this is why piracy will never go away and is a necessary thing in this day and age of restrictive streaming and reader platforms.

^ (from the other thread)

Though I do find it funny that the pro-piracy crowd has been longing for Japanese companies to distribute anime and manga directly and worldwide, in order to eliminate regional barriers and cut out the "middleman" (usually Western) "localizers," who were supposedly the ones imposing onerous costs on consumers and ideology-driven censorship on the material. But nope, turns out that in this case, "Japan" directly entering foreign markets = higher prices and more censorship. A shining example of "be careful what you wish for" Exclamation

Gotta love how the censorship in the 3rd panel accidentally makes her look naked, unless you look closely enough to see the swimsuit side ties on her hips.

I think the funniest thing about this is that it makes images that aren't even that bad far more risque than they actually are. Like, you can't tell me that the thumbnail image doesn't make it look like her bra or bare breasts are completely visible behind the censor bar.
