The paper crane/origami is like a good luck charm, giving them to others signifies that you wish them well. As for that thing floating toward the sun that was Damocles. |

No, please, leave it open ended. I like it much better when you can speculate either way, it makes things much more interesting.

Me, I'm a big fan of having an ending that is clear on the events that unfolded and what happened in them. So, sorry Cowboy Bebop, but I'm not impressed. And Elfen Lied, I really loved you, but the open ending was grating (spoiler[though I did like Lucy's redemption, which was not ambiguous]).
But, I also like an open-ended ending, so far as the possibility of more adventures lying ahead. Take Escaflowne. It ends on a decisive note of sorts. spoiler[After defeating Dornkirk and his machine, Hitomi goes back to Earth. However, she can always return, and you get the feeling that the characters have much more story to tell.] Note that I hate the sort of endings that beg for a sequel, but Escaflowne avoids this. Other good endings of this sort can be found in Samurai Champloo and Trigun. In the end though, it is mostly a personal opinion. I'm not arguing on an objective basis (well, not much, and certainly not here). |

How is Bebop open ended? spoiler[Spike is dead; Vicious is dead; Fay remembers her past, but can never have her old life back; Jet resolved his relationship with his ex-girlfriend quite a while ago; Ed went to live with her dad.] |

The ending of Code Geass reminded me of Full Metal Alchemist, the same thinking that you want more but you already know it is over (well, in this case we're having -and had- more of FMA besides the movie xD).
Hey! May be Sunrise is playing Zero and they are fooling everyone and a 3rd season is coming. But everytime I lie myself with that, I think, "a 3rd season about what?"... It would be meaningless. |

So you assume. I've seen characters in Anime survive after getting riddled with bullets (like Mao from Code Geass). I've seen characters getting stabbed right through their torso and yet still able to walk (like spoiler[Jin] in Samurai Champloo's final episode). Spike could spoiler[still be alive. We are never told he actually dies.] |

I think you're asking for too much. spoiler[He, having sustained massive injuries, collapses, says bang, and we see his star wink out (as foreshadowed earlier in the conclusion).]

I all honest I loved and Hated the ending of Code Geass. It thoroughly depresses me when i think back on spoiler[Lelouches death. ]But, I agree that the way they end the season was awesome. I Mean they did not leave the viewers on the edge of a cliff to wonder "What happened it Just ends here?" I think that it was a beautiful way to end the series but really disheartening t know that Lelouch went on and did so much the entire world but only few people are actually aware of his good intentions behind his evil deeds in the end.*I Hope that it all was just a set up to depress us so we would not expect a third season the pop up at of nowhere, because, i love lelouche but love him more when he is alive.* http://media.photobucket.com/image/code%20geass/dan3_03/cgep05bw1.gif?o=43[img][/img]

I'm typically very picky when it comes to endings...and I must say that this ending was brilliant...a little rushed...but brilliant. I haven't seen a true "tragic hero" play such a great part in a very long time. No happy endings here, this is something that will stay with you.

You know, after catching up and reading the last 6 or so pages of ideas and theories in this thread and thinking back to all the allusions of The Dark Knight, and on top of the semi-train wreck that was the last arc (before the last episode anyway), I'm almost inclined to reconsider my overall opinion of the series and bear a little forgiveness on the rushed writing efforts.
In fact, I just had this theory during lunch. In TDK, they sort of rush the last portion of the movie after Harvey becomes Two-Face. Joker does the boat thing, Batman goes and stops him, Dent kidnaps Gordon's family, Gordon and Batman confront him, Harvey dies, and Batman's off into the night as the anti-hero of sorts. Also consider the parallel that both the story in TDK and R2 revolve around said "masked heroes." Batman takes the blame for what Harvey did to preserve the trust and hopes of Gotham, while Lelouch takes responsibility and essentially carries the entire burden of Britannia's totalitarian rule, and both of them become bad guys in the end, only it's Batman not Bruce Wayne who's the villain and Lelouch who's trying to separate the Zero persona into a stand alone entity, making only himself the villain. If you think about it, all the writing snafus, inconsistencies, etc. were a result of Lelouch's actions. A lot of us saw the series as going downhill, but then he gets his comeuppance at the end. And the result? We're all happy/pleased with the fashion of his demise. It's a strange kind of empathy, but I think the writers made the plot bad on purpose, because in turn it made us dislike the series and Lelouch, which is exactly what Lelouch the character wanted from the rest of world anyway, and thus it all fell right into Zero Requiem. The world population of the anime and a majority of us viewers all delighted at the ending, but still don't mind that the Zero persona continues to exist. It gives the world in the anime hope that Zero will continue with the legacy that was created from the whole rebellion, and it gives fans of the franchise hope that they might even make a continuation someday because Zero still lives in our minds as well. Same exact thing with Batman. See the parallels? If you look at the last arc from that perspective and tie the whole thing together in retrospect, then R2 may indeed be a masterpiece that we haven't realized. However, I'd have to re-watch the series again in its entirety, as opposed to a weekly basis (I hate such large time gaps between episodes). I still don't like the pacing it was written at, so perhaps a re-watch might prove otherwise. I'll stick with a Good / B+ or Very Good / A- rating for now. |

...If that's what the writers were getting at, heck, that would be amazing. I'm not sure if that is what they were trying to go for (personally I think they just didn't have enough time), but, that is a really interesting theory, I want to hear what other people have to say about it. |

Personally, I'm not all that enthusiastic about your theory, Tony K.. I just feel that no writer worth his or her salt would deliberately sabotage the plot. Now, undermining the characters; I can see that happening. Many Auteur productions do this in French cinema, and we can see an Anime example in Evangelion.
But the plot? Too risky; it is so easy to come across as bad writing rather than a deliberate effort. One might argue that that is the point; to completely lure the audience into the deception of a bad production, then hit them with a great finale. But I don't really buy that argument. It is so easy to stuff it all up, and I cannot see Sunrise risking a potentially huge money-earner like the Code Geass franchise on such a gamble. It's an interesting theory, but I just don't buy into it I'm afraid. |

Maybe it wouldn't be so much "sabotaging the plot", as it were, but wrapping it up in such a way that it is Lelouch's character development, rather than the overall story, which comes out on top after going through his own personal "train wreck", intentional or otherwise.
I'm not sure if that is enough to explain everything...I think it's true that part of it is inevitably bad or merely rushed writing, the rest being arguably deliberate. So both elements are involved. In what proportion? Hard to tell. But the fact that such a theory could even exist at least gives the show a slight boost, I'd think. It doesn't really affect my own final rating, perhaps because I was less disturbed or annoyed by the general course of events to begin with and did take into account some positives, not just negatives. |
