I would agree because as you noted, my objections are all based towards the end of the list and there's not that many of them. If I thought harder about it, I would no doubt come up with titles that are more fitting than some of the ones on the list but that's not an exercise I'm likely to undertake.

One of the 76 anime fans' lists I included to make this was yours Blood-, out of the 8 you rated masterpiece, 6 are in this top 100. Also, I should point out that since you listed relatively few as masterpieces, the weight of your vote on each was higher than that of others' favorite lists.
Anyway, I think there are some titles that are widely appreciated by fans that should be put into this list, such as Gunbuster (1988), Noir (2001), and Bocchi the Rock (2021). I think I should update it with more favorite lists to get it to be a bit more accurate reflection of the fandom's favorites. |

Blood, Blood, you should know better. That list, which ever version, may not be criticized. You can't complain about what shows are on it, or possibly more important, what shows are not on it. You can't even argue about the placement on the list of individual shows. Each of the 90 lists involved is that of a single individual and is completely subjective. You can argue about all aspects of it or call bullshit entirely. However, now that you have 90 of the things, it is democracy in action, vox populi, the voice of the mob. That has sanctified it. Moreover, those 90 lists have been further cleansed by treating them with statistics. This wrings out all the bs and leaves only pure, I don't know what chicken shit maybe? This process has consecrated the list and makes it untouchable. Question the details and you end up questioning the entire methodology, and it falls to pieces. Seriously, I can see no truth in a list that includes Aria and Black Lagoon and tries to rank them. Other than being animation, they have nothing in common. I have to question a list that rates movies against 13 episode TV series against 100+ episode OVAs. Bunny Drop was fun, but does it really warrant listing where Non, non Biyori does not? A Canon list of some form of entertainment is something to be made by scholars long enough in the future that no one cares about it. It is not something to be discussed by fans or even reviewers. |

So if I understand you correctly, Alan45, you are suggesting that I be designated the Official Anime Canon Poobah, prepare my own list and then everybody simply treats that as the God's Truth? Hmm. Interesting idea. I like it.

Thing is, I see great anime as art, something beyond simple entertainment, and in that sense, shows of different genres such as Aria and Hajime no Ippo have more in common with each other than with the mass of mediocre shows produced every year. That is, when I want to experience the feeling of a great anime, I can experience it by watching either of these two shows, and I cannot experience it by watching random mediocre slop on Crunchyroll. Thus, the point of a list like this is to serve as a guide for an anime fan for a set of great anime that allows the fan to experience the artistic possibilities of anime, a set of titles that is unconstrained by genre conventions. It is a useful list for me so that I can get to experience some great shows which I haven't watched yet. |

For you, any list you honestly make is God's truth, for anyone else, not so much. 
@Jose Cruz Of course great anime is art. "Great" any medium of creation is art. If a list like this works for you, more power to you. I tend to agree with you about the quality of much that comes out each season. It is not Crunchyroll's fault but rather a reflection of what is issued in Japan. There are a significant number of missing shows that are at least as good as much of the list which you will be missing out on. Where I do have a problem is your calling this a "Canon" list. It is nothing of the sort. A literary (in this case video) Canon is supposed to be a group of works against which all other works are judged. What you have here is just a popularity list. Popularity does not equal quality. |

Thanks for the lists, Jose Cruz. Life is so much brighter with lists! Anyway, I'm saddened to see Paprika dropped off the most recent version. On the other hand I was surprised to see Welcome to the NHK made it, so I got out my old Siren Visual (a long defunct Oz distributor) DVD and re-watched it for the first time in maybe 15 years. I loved it and upgraded its rating from Very Good to Excellent.

Welcome to the NHK is godly. I originally watched the dubbed version because that was back at the start of my anime career when I preferred dubs over subs. I have long since done a complete flip on that so my rewatch will, of course, be the sub version. I believe the dubbed version of Welcome is one of the stronger dubs out there.

Looking at MyAnimeList, I see a strong recency bias in the top anime.
21 of the top 50 were released 2020 or later, and only 8 were before 2010 (not counting FMA: Brotherhood, which ended in 2010 but started in 2009) Older anime seem to drop considerably in the rankings over time. For example, the Haruhi movie had a 9.08 to make #5 back in 2010, and a 8.59 now. Other top anime from the time have likewise had big drops. I think that it's not really that new anime is better, just that there's a lot more of it now, and people can be more critical of past anime with existing biases and then-innovations becoming rote, while being more positive with brand new anime that they are actively engaged in. Though MyAnimeList may not be relevant for much longer. I see that an AI company bought it out this year, and you know how those things have a way of ruining everything. |

If you look at the top 50 anime of the Encyclopedia (animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/ratings-anime.php?top50=best_bayesian) it is way less biased towards newer titles than MyAnimeList (or Anilist where I keep my list which I noticed is even more biased than MyAnimeList ). It is generally recognized that sites rating movies and TV shows will bias the movies/shows towards newer titles, which is why I made this top 100 anime list based on favorites' lists of fans, which is less biased towards newer titles, it suggests that anime quality peaked from 2006 to 2011, but more or less produced a constant stream of quality titles from the late 1990s to the present (so nearly 30 years). |
