So I am debating on watching either Bleach or Ghost in the Shell. Both look very interesting. But this is not so much to ask you about which one you prefer and why (though feel free to do so), but more about me being confused as hell about GitS.
I just watched the original movie (1995) and was going to go watch the series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Solid state society (52 eps., I think Netflix said 2003, but Wiki is saying 2006???) I was curious about whether Ghost in the shell: Standalone complex solid state society was a prequel or something to the movie?? Or is it based afterwards, as in, Major and Puppet Master are still one, or are they completely separate from each other? I am also aware that there are more movies, and maybe another series as well? But I am much to confused as is to go into that right now. And if there are, what order should I watch them, and do they all follow the same story, or are some of them in a "different dimension" type thing. My level of confuse is >9000. Thanks for any help

This'll probably get moved into the General Questions thread, but here goes anyway.
There are two completely separate anime franchises for GitS. Ghost in the Shell (movie) and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie) go together, the latter being a sequel of the former, and the first movie is what deals with the Puppetmaster. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV, 26 episodes), Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: 2nd Gig (TV, 26 episodes), and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society (movie), also go together. They go in that order. IIRC, 2003 is when SAC came out, and 2006 is when SSS came out. It does confuse me a bit, why Netflix is using the cover of Solid State Society, when it's the two TV series they have. For each series, definitely watch them in the order I've listed. I would also suggest not mixing them together while you watch, so you don't confuse yourself with details of one vs. the other. While the original movie is good, it is much more psychological and doesn't have as much character development as SAC does (and not just due to length). The second movie is just very confusing. I personally would recommend watching the Stand Alone Complex series, because I feel they're overall stronger. |

So if I am correct, the 2 movies, Gits and Gits: Innocence have nothing to do with the actual series of eposodes? So what IS the series on netflix with 52 eps? Is that just both Gits series in one tab? Also, should I watch the movie of the reg series after I finish the series, or is it like Naruto where it isnt really of great importance when you watch it? |

Ghost in the Shell has two different universeses:
Ghost in the Shell (the original movie) and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence comprise the first universe. The second is the Stand Alone Complex verse which contains the two series, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex: 2nd Gig, and it's sequel movie Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society. This would also include the two recap films which condense the two tv series. These are The Laughing Man which adapts SAC, and The Individual Eleven which adapts SAC: 2nd Gig. As for which to watch to watch it depends on your preferences. Bleach is a straight up martial-arts/sword-fighting action show and Ghost in the Shell is a sophisticated, philosophical, and psychological sci-fi police drama with some intermixed action elements so they're really two different animals. |

The series movie (i.e. SSS, which you may also see listed as an OVA on some sites) is a direct continuation of the two TV series which takes place two years after the end of Second Gig. Basically, both the movies and SAC are based on the original manga, but are not directly related to each other. If you are familiar with the two different adaptations of Fullmetal Alchemist the situation is somewhat similar.
A word of warning regarding the the Laughing Man and The Individual Eleven compilations; they have a different English dub to the series (and pretty universally regarded a sub-par, especially given the top notch quality of the original). |
