I was just wondering if anyone knew when this was intended to be released? FFVII was only one of the greatest and most disputed games of all time. How long are they going to keep the fans in the States waiting???

You really don't need to bold everything...

Anyway, last I heard it wasn't coming out in Japan untill February. However, they're really crawling along and as of October's showing in Montreal they still insisted they weren't finished. A Spring release is more likely now.

It took them 2 years to make the Final Fantasy: the Spirits Within movie, and that was the best CGI stuff they could muster back then.

Imagine that being applied to FFVII and it's rich background. And advance the CGI factor by about 5 times.

Well, is not out in Japan yet, so it really isn't a matter of keeping fans in the United States waiting. But rather a matter of keeping fans waiting period.

I haven't seen any date for a Japanese release yet, but I don't think it'll be too long till that is annoounced.

The movie has been delayed until sometime Spring 2005 in Japan, so it is quite likely that it will not be until Fall 2005 that it is released here in the US. It should be noted that Square is hoping to release the movie at roughly the same time as when the PSP is released - so that is also causing the release date to be adjusted.

Right now, though, the "when" isn't as much of a concern as the amount of distribution.

I've missed out on Ghost in the Shell 2 and going to miss out on Appleseed. Why? Because the closest place for me to see them is about 1/3 a day away. Plus, that's a lot of extra money to pay on top of the movie itself.

If Columbia / Tristar picks up Square-Enix's pictures again, then the distribution will be more widespread, and I can go to a theater that's much closer and would carry it then.

If not, then once again, I (and many others) will be out of luck on seeing them in the theaters. (I'm waiting on the DVD releases of the aforementioned two movies to see them.)

Also, because of The Spirits Within, I also wonder if they can generate a mass-market crowd for it. TSW went way over many people's heads -- that's the impression I got when I was in the theater watching it with other people who just looked confused throughout the feature.

Advent Children will get the fans of FF into the theaters, but probably no one else unless whoever ends up distributing it markets it well enough to attract moviegoers who do not know the FF VII storyline (or saw TSW and hated it or was way too confused by it to see another "FF" film).

Distribution wont be much of a problem, it's not going to be shown in theaters, it's an OAV (there's also a version being made for the PSP).

That's what I thought, also, Emerje.

But, many rumors keep surfacing in both magazines and websites of either an extended or normal-sized theatrical release of some kind (mostly because of the independent film festival showings and many hints).

If it's a straight-to-DVD OAV, though, I'll be happy with that. Smile

Yes, but as you said, they're just rumors, and even if it does turn out to be true in Japan doesn't make it for sure in the US. I wouldn't worry too much about it until something official is stated. From what I remember the only comments that Square-Enix has made is that they would like to explore other avenues, but all of these festival showings could be just that.
