Has anyone seen enough of this early '80s series to tell me what it was about? I recently saw its movie spinoff on VOD (Go Shogun: The Time Etranger) and got the impression that the movie was a dramatic departure from the series. The encyclopedia entry on this site is not forthcoming on description, however.

All I know is that Sengoku Majin GoShogun was licensed by Saban in the mid-80s and combined with Aku Dai-sakusen Srungle to become Macron 1.

Go Shogun and Time Etranger are as different as G-Gundam and Z-Gundam, if not more so. Go Shogun was IMO a typical Super Robot show complete with cool bad guy and goofy array of weapons. Can't really say much more, good or bad about the series since it has been a very long time. The Goshogun with it's Space Bazooka is one of my favorite units in the video game Super Robot Wars. I only saw a couple of Macron 1 episodes, which butchered Go-Shogun. They used famous rock tunes (like Hit me with Your Best Shot) if I remember, but then again that was almost as long ago.

That's kind of what I thought, since the only hint of mecha in The Time Etrangier is a miniature toy 'mech hanging from the rear view mirror of a car. It was actually a pretty decent - if somewhat confusing - production as a stand-alone story, though it definitely showed its age (circa 1985).
