Why are we not allowed to have Signatures?

Signatures were disabled to keep the forum clean and tidy. A professional look, I suppose you could say.
But hush, don't tell anyone; we ARE allowed to have signatures. They just have to be in word form (so no pictures) and pretty short (like two words maximum). You'll have to write them out each time; there is no option to automatically include them. If a Moderator tries to tell you off for making one, you just point them (politely of course) to the posts of abunai (a Moderator) and tempest (the ANN Editor-in-Chief for crying out loud). Both of them sign off every post with a short signature. I know of a couple of regular users who also use signatures and never get in trouble. So there you have it. Hope it helps. Because signatures are about stoking one's ego, and this forum is about (hopefully) meaningful discussion. It's all about keeping the signal-to-noise ratio high.
While I don't understand why Tempest and abunai put their name at the bottom of every post (it's already at the left of the post, so what's the point?) those are signatures in the original sense of the word, i.e. signing your name at the bottom of a letter. Not the flashy self-promotion that usually passes as "signatures" on the web. |

Would this be an "acceptable signature"?

Just put that in your website slot, so if anyone wants to know they can click the "www" button beneath your post.

Well, both Tempest and I used signatures before the rule was implemented, and I will steadfastly argue that we are continuing under a "grandfather clause". But as for the reasons why, I do it because it allows me to include deliberate or semi-deliberate postscripts. The art of letter-writing may be dying, but nevertheless.... a postscript is originally a later addition to a written letter, appended after the signature because it represents an afterthought, and often marked by a "P.S." (for post scriptum). As the art of letters became more sophisticated, deliberate postscripts became part of the form, added to represent a less-formal sidebar to the original letter. When I write posts, they always end in my signature, and anything that appears thereafter is either an afterthought (a genuine postscript) or an informal comment/remark on the content of the post, in the form of brief and wry or offhand note. If the latter, they're always typographically marked by altered font size or italics. Getting back to the original question: if you're going to "sneak" a signature past a moderator, it has to be a real signature. That is, nothing but your name or username. I can't speak for other moderators, but I wouldn't react to that. If you start adding self-promotion or fannish kerfuffle, you're going to get moderated. - abunai See that, up there? That's my signature. And this? This is a self-referentially wry remark. |

I think Dan really nails it right on the head there. |

Hey man, don't go insulting tempest like that. He's a cool guy. Wait, what is that you're saying, you were taking a swipe at abunai instead? Oh, okay, carry on then. You don't need a signature to make a snide remark by way of a postscript. Just saying. {...and neither you nor daxomni need a signature to stoke your grotesquely swollen egos.- abunai} Last edited by dtm42 on Fri Mar 26, 2010 4:46 pm; edited 4 times in total |

Eh, I always used them to just show up my current favorite comic/book/anime/whatever. But I understand how it could get out of hand. |

To understand means to have visited a forum where signatures fill the whole screen, where single lines/words/smileys of the actual posts are lost in the confusion.

Jeez, if that's what you are like when I belittle daxomni, I'd hate to see what you're like when I make fun of you. The snide remark was towards daxomni, for the record. Maybe I should have used a [/sarcasm] tag. Or perhaps I should just never stick up for your ungrateful arse in the future. Yeah, that's safer. |
