I started watching anime back in the mid 80s with Speed Racer and Star Blazers, then the movies on SciFi and others until the mid 90s when anime (other than the DBs and Gundams of the world, which I have no interst in) disappeared from TV. I picked it up again in 2003 when I stumbled into Blue Gender on [as], since then, I have rewatched most of the series/movies I saw back then and many have not aged well, below is my run down and I was wondering if anyone from that era has carried out a similar exercise.
[in no specific order] Speed Racer - Back Then - thought it was "way cool" an action packed series with some heart and humor - Now - campy as all get out, but still an enjoyable watch (as long as you appropriately lower expectations). Project AKo movies - BT - hilarious, action packed flicks - Now - not that funny and the animation has really aged badly Vampire Hunter D - BT - really deep action/horror flick with great characters - Now - still watchable, but definitively shows its age Venus Wars - BT - great action/war movie with some character development thrown in - Now - what did I ever see in this by the numbers war flick? Dominion Tank Police - BT - Action/Humor/Great Characters, what more could you ask for (and colorful dildo mines, its full of win) - Now - yep, still love it, has aged the least of all of them. Akira - BT - OK somebody is trying way too hard to be heavy, pass - Now - did not like it then, never got past 15 mins on the rewatch Star Blazers - BT - this show blew my teenaged mind, it was sci-fi yet it had real characters in real situations with real repercussions (way better than GI Joe where bombs were falling on people and they just stumbled out barely hurt) - Now- tried watching but stopped half way through the first ep, the dated character designs scared me off, this is one show I would rather keep in the magic of memory than watch again and have it turn out wanting |
