In the anime forum there's a sticky thread about favorite anime (Sticky: 10 favorite and 5 least favorite anime?) which I find very interesting (in general ).
I think it would be a good idea to have the same thing here in the manga forum (only about manga of course )!
Of course I could also just start a thread like that, but unfortunately I haven't really read enough manga yet to do this...

I was going to post a thread like this, but I still have tons of manga to read (and more I hope to read) before I did my top 10.
To set a good example, someone need to put major thoughts into the first post with good examples so others will follow. I hate it when people just post listed thread or simple reason like "it's interesting".
Perhaps after finals, I'll really put some time into it.

That would be great!
I also thought that maybe a mod could start a thread like this and remind of the rules (because of what you said, so that it doesn't become a list thread)...

The problem is (I think at least) that reading a complete manga series takes a lot longer (in time, effort, and money probably) than completing an anime series. In addition, in manga you don't have many single book stories, as most are series of at least 7+ volumes.
This means that people will generally have read much fewer manga series than they have seen anime series/movies. In general, it's nice, but I don't think that it would work out as good as in the anime forum. I personally would never be able to give a good list, as there are only 2 series which I completed (cowboy bebop, and cowboy bebop -- shooting star, 3 and 2 volumes respectively), so there isn't much list that I could make of it.

Time, effort and money?
Time - takes me a bit less than a half hour to read a volume of manga - about the same amount of time as a DVD episode. And it's more portable, so more opportunites arise to read as opposed to watching an episode.
Effort - I suppose this depends on the individual. There are those who don't like to read, but there will always be enough people who like read the manga of their favorite anime series.
Money - That makes even less sense - A volume of manga contains enough material to make 3-4 episodes of an anime series - so the amount of the content, volume for volume, is also about the same as well.
DVD = 19.99 - 24.99 at local B&M store.
Manga = 7.95 - 11.95 for a single volume.
Granted, there are a lot of manga volumes out there - and unfortunately, it's recently come about that manga has become more popular. Due to this, there aren't that many complete series out. But even without a complete series being read, it's not too hard to identify a favorite, and there are plenty of titles to pick from - domestic release and otherwise.

Give me a month to get finals over with and I'll do it in a heartbeat. Right now I have so much homework that typing this message alone was my entire sudy break.

I've gotten through about ten series, but most are just a few volumes, with my longest series completed being Dragon ball at 16 volumes. That said, very few series indeed have been finished off in America.... With some of the Shonen Jump titles and their extremely slow GN release rates, I worry some may take years to publish....

One of the main reasons I do collect manga over anime is out of convenience. I don't feel like wading through 25 minute episodes when I can read manga at my own pace. Time is money.

It doesn't really have to be complete, as long as you got the gist of the series.
After reading 10 volume of say Vagabond or Blade of the Immortal, I think you got the feel of the manga, how it's handle and direction the story is likely to take. Even though the overall story might not be complete, a lot of arc and smaller story has. So you can make a good judgement that if you enjoy the first 10 or so volume of One Piece, you're going to enjoy the other 20.
And plus I think some of the shorter series (say x-day or wolf's rain) are harder to judge because you don't have enough material to make an overall opinion.
