I nominate Japanese anime for most underrated genre

The article really is just the same old argument made yet again. Nothing really new there.
I do have a complaint over the idea that anime is a "genre" though. It's not, it's a medium, just as animation period is. |

Have to disagree there. All anime is animation, but not all animation is anime. Anime is a specific kind of animation, it is not a medium unto itself. |

True, it's more of a sub-medium, I suppose, if you must put a label on it. But that still doesn't make it a genre, since genre is about subject matter. |

Agreed. That's why I consider anime to be a specific type of animation, as opposed to a genre.

I dunno, Blood... The line is being blurred as to exactly what anime is.
Let's look at Avatar: The Last Airbender... Judging what a medium is through stereotypes is foolish (magic girls, big eyes, spiky blue hair, etc etc), yet, when you look at Avatar outside those generalizations, it's 100% anime. Yet, the hardcore will laugh at you for suggesting that. I definitely lean more towards anime being a medium instead of a genre, only because the line is being more and more blurred. Like, from twenty to ten years ago, you could definitely get away with calling it a genre. But it's passed that point by now. |

It's not the only movie that didn't get the notice it deserved because there were only three nomination slots this year. Tangled also definitely should have been up there. |

How so? I understand the argument that Avatar is anime because it contains a lot of elements generally found in anime (even if I don't agree with it). Yet you seem to be tossing out this argument and at the same time still claiming it is anime. It's not from Japan and you're not looking at generalizations. In what way then is it "100% anime"? |

The article liked to may have nothing to say that's news to anyone who watches anime. But even if it's just the same old points, it's a good thing all the same that they're being brought to the attention of readers of a major website. (Though reading the comments was an eye-opener for me. Lots of people hate anime, apparently. I wonder why? What have they seen that scarred them so much? Or is it totally based on ignorance?)

possibly due to they see it as "for children" or others have seen 1 or 2 bad anime's and lump all in the same basket (e.g 4kids versions of anime). |

Most of the criticisms were along the loli/pedo lines.
I'm curious whether this image of anime is something held more by young people. Most people my age (60+) wouldn't know what's meant by "anime." Those that do probably think "Ghibli," not "loli." Yet the frequency of the "it's all about pedos" claim tells me this has become a common perspective about anime outside its fanbase. I'll admit that current trends in the industry tend to reinforce this view. Perhaps anime became more popular in the West just as it was heading down the narrowing path we see it following these days in Japan? I began watching anime a few years ago starting with shows like Monster, Junni Kokki, and Hikaru no Go, so I never would have associated anime primarily with lolicon. Since I've started watching anime the borders were moved and I don't think it's good. Every season brings new "almost hentai" or "controversial" series that make me feel embarrassed to admit that I like anime.
Is it hard to image friend doing some research about that "anime"? Will he come across RoV, Monster, Matsumoto's works, Mōryō no Hako, 12 kingdoms or rather KisxSis? I can give you a tip: records in databases about those first usually get comment once in a blue moon and wait months to be subbed. |

perhaps its that you are becoming more aware of it rather than it being "new" ; when you get older series like legend of the demon womb for example which really pushed the boundaries in alot of area's. |
