Silly little topic but after watching Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan I began wondering about the weapon names. It's pretty clear that Excalibolg (Excalibur) and Durandal are named after famous swords. But what about Eckilsax? I'm pretty sure the fansubbers were scratching their heads as they listened to what was said (or deciphered any japanese subtitles for the hearing-impaired... ekirusakusu?).

I'm inclined to think the name is actually Egil's Axe, after the famous Icelandic viking Egil Skallagrimsson who preferred to fight with an axe. He is also said to have killed his playmate with an axe at the tender age of six (which would fit the premise of the anime very well). Speaking against that conclusion is that Egil didn't walk around with a famous magical axe (or sword) but presumably used many different axes during his lifetime. It would also be a rather obscure reference, alhough the show is filled with them (from Kafka to Perry).

So, anyboy else have any ideas? It could be a sword after all since in the Germanic world many swords had names ending in -sax. Just have to figure out the name in front if that's so.

Or perhaps the romanji spelling can be twisted into something unexpected, like Achilles' socks? He could certainly have used something with a deadly smell to keep people away from his vulnerable heels.

Hmmmm...........it could also be Ecsellion. I got that name from Beet The Vandel Buster(Or is it Adventure King Beet?). Ecsellion is the name of the main character's Saiga. I don't know where they got that name from but it looks pretty similar to the name you gave.

No, that was probably borrowed from Tolkien. Ecthelion was a name borne by several of the Stewards of Gondor.

I have no idea how they came up with the name エッケルザクス (which transliterates as Ekkeruzakusu)... it doesn't really ring any bells, I'm afraid. However, the "Egil's Axe" theory seems unlikely, since that would be more properly エギルザクス (Egiruzakusu).
