I'm totally clueless in the world of manga though I've been into anime for a little less than 2 years. I finally bought some at my first convention I attended this past weekend.

So, I want to break into manga. I bought one book, which apparently is american in origin(no problems though! still good), and the full FMP series. Anyway, I'm looking for some light hearted stuff. Comedy, romance etc. Would like them to be not too long, 8ish or less volumes, and completed =) Also, I don't want to get anything with an anime counterpart right now. Just pure manga stuff.(I've watched a lot of anime and besides me buying FMP, I love the series, I want to read what I already haven't seen).

I've been looking at the top50 of this site and what other places are selling to get a feel for some manga but I'd like to hear what actual people have to say. I like pretty much everything, but I already have ideas of what to get for more serious manga.

I should've bought more at the convention =/, 5-8$ books.

Thanks a bunch. More things to spend money on, hah.

Few of the manga that I'm into are completed or of the length that you want (they have more than 15+).

But one that I really enjoy and is complete with 7 vols. is Alice 19th by Yuu Watase. No anime has been made of this yet. (But I really hope that someone will)

Whoops, just read that you wanted light-hearted. This is not. There is some comedy to it (inappropriate kisses, hugging, marriage proposals) but as a whole it is a drama. Still, it's very good. It's about a girl name Alice who's just a bit jealous of how her sister, Mayura, is able to talk to people, make friends etc. Alice is also in love with Kyo, Mayura's love interest. One day in an arguement between the two girls, Alice tells her sister that she wishes Mayura would disappear. Mayura does...and to find out more...READ THE MANGA!!!
BWAAA HAHAHA! (sorry, couldn't resist doing that! Laughing )

Anyway, I hope that you find something that you really like. I'm going to keep an eye on this thread myself. I'm always looking for anime/manga to spend more money I don't have on.

Love Roma is a charming and honest title. It's probably something you would like. I like it because it avoid a lot of the cliche that you would find in a typical romance/comedy and it's a good seinen manga. The 2nd Vol. (out of 5 so far) just came out last month, I'm still waiting for it to come in.

That's not finished either eh? =P I find that a LOT of manga is still coming out. Like..is Berserk even finished? In Japan that is. I only see up to like volume 10 being sold in the states and that's..pathetic =/ Doesn't the anime cover up to even volume 11 or something?

Lydia, like I said, I really do like EVERYTHING. Jack of all trades I guess. I just wanted some more light hearted manga for the time being =) But I'll look into that. I'm actually taking the time to read some before I go to sleep...I don't think I've ever done that...and for that atleast, I want something I won't be DYING to read more and also won't be too complex for a 2 or 3 AM reading time.

I hate finding really good looking manga now and finding out they're only half way complete(or atleast released in english). I've been watching Naruto for like... 1.5 years, but I can't imagine waiting half a year for just 1 volume of manga.

Berserk which was release in 3 month interval and will soon switch to bi-monthly, eventually it will catch up with the Japanese release and fan are gonna have to wait 6 month for new material to be release in Japan. Keep in the mind that the original Berserk Series started in 1992 and it's been like 14 Years for Berserk to reach 30 volume. The japanese been getting 2 volume a year while we're getting 4 and soon to be 6 volume per year. You might think that's pathetic but I'm grateful that darkhorse is bringing Berserk over the way it is.

I really think you're viewing manga in the wrong light. Companies arn't just trying to rush all the title onto the shelf as quickly as possible to complete the series... they have to pace themself on their releases because of shelf space and just giving time for title to sell, especially for long series. The market seem to be saturated, you don't want to oversaturated even more.

Most manga here are release in three month interveal and that's just about the same or even faster than the Japanese release. Since you're collecting like 1 or 2 series, everything seem so long when there's a 3 month wait between volume, but if you're like a normal manga fan with tons of series, it's a nice break to wallet and let you check out new title at the same time.

What I'm wondering is why the release of Berserk is still behind where the anime left off; what we have in the states. I know it's been going on for an extremely long time. I'm still not thrilled about that but I'm glad they are going to be bringing it over faster. I have to deal with slow releases but seeing the anime is decently old now...we should atleast have past it's stopping point by now in the manga.

Why should the release pace of the Berserk manga have anything to do with the anime? Just because people buy the Berserk manga doesn't mean they've seen the anime.

Well, I don't know many mangas but out of curiosity at which convention were you at? I went one some time ago. Maybe you were there.

The problem is that the series is quite old and I can't believe I can't even find past the anime released in the states. It's not such a big deal, I never said it was, it's something that I'm not going to bother buying and I find it extremely odd. That's all. And if someone missed it which I'm sure they have, I'm talking about the release of Berserk in the states, not the original in Japan.

Anyway, I was just at Megacon in Orlando. First of many that I'll be going to it seems.

It wasn't until you began this thread that I realized how many of my manga series are incomplete!

Just thought of a rather light-hearted one, though. Try Angelic Layer. Yes, there is an anime out but it's still cute. The ending IS different from the anime as is the storyline about Misaki's mother. And, of course, it's by CLAMP.

Another good one by CLAMP that has humorous, serious, and VERY serious moments is Tokyo Babylon. This is the prequel to X/1999 and you're able to meet Subaru's twin.

Actually, yeah, I've been hearing a lot about Angelic Layer enough on the anime forums and elsewhere that I've got the name stuck in my head. And...Angel Sanctuary? Something different of course =), and not completed lol, but I've heard a lot about that too.

Funny your other thread is DN Angel. Angel on the brain. Saw the anime, wasn't too impressed. I kind of want to watch it again though. As what goes with most manga/anime, the manga is probably said to be better. The written version always is =P

Oh and re-reading your post darkhunter,

Good point. Since I had never read/bought manga, seeing it all at the convention...good god. There must've been 10 vendors with enough manga to fill up a huge standalone bookshelf twice over. I can definitely see how that plays into manga sales. Question's been plenty answered. Still...stupid Berserk =P, friend and I were crushed when we finished the anime. It was just so good.

Thanks for all of the suggestions thus far. Didn't need my money anyway...

I know how you feel on THAT one! Rolling Eyes Laughing

Angel Sanctuary is pretty good. I've enjoyed it as manga a lot better than I did as anime, since they only did about 1/3 of the story. It is a good story though. VERY inappropriate romance, love triangles, really sick and perverted angels, demons who care, swords, drugs, and a bunch of other stuff. It looks like (according to ANN Encyclopedia) that there are 20 vols. of it, only 12 have been released here. **8 to go. 1 volume every 3 months = 2 more years. <big sigh!>**

I'm still waiting to see what will be recommended to you in the "Light-hearted" genre. I don't need my money either! Laughing Laughing Laughing
