Do you feel that sometimes there are popular title out there that get way too much exposure for its own good? Sometimes TOO much hype can kill a title, especially those that have read/seen better titles. Kind of like celebrity such as Britney Spears or 50 Cent, people are sick of them. It's not like the title is bad, they are in fact pretty good with a lot of appeal but you see people recommend and raving about these title over and over again on every forum like it's the best title in the world. With word of mouth, it's not surprising that these title are pupular among a lot of new manga/anime fan.
Sword/Samurai manga:
Kenshin & Berserk. Can't go to any forum without people mentioning either one of these two. The fandom is huge for these two title. The berserk fan are always raving about how violent and "cool" the series is. And the Kenshin fanboy swear that Kenshin is the best "sword/samurai" type series that ever seen. Kenshin didn't get good until the Jinchu arc and getting through kyoto arc was a chore.
Shonen:
Naruto & Bleach. Are these two of the biggest shonen jump title or what? Just in the last few weeks, there have been plenty of front page news on Naruto and Bleach. Now suddenly, Bleach has become a "mature" title because it's going to be on adult swim. I like these two title, I own the manga (latest volume) to them, but these two title don't really live up to the hype that everybody is making it out to be.
Violent series:
Gantz and Elfen Lied. Man everytime somone ask for a violent anime or manga, gantz and Elfen lied are usually the first two title people recommend. Many people these title shocking and perhaps that's why it's memorable. However, the story in both series were pretty weak, imo.
Comedy:
Love Hina & Azumanga. Most fan claim that these two series are the funniest series ever, but I thought the jokes were repetitive after a while. They're quirky title and most anime fans I've met are a little "quirky" themselfs-- in other words, they become annoying after a while. Perhaps I'm used to the classic Ranma/Ah My Goddess type comedy.
If you have your own opinion, feel free to post them.

Love Hina? Really? I never really thought of Love Hina too much in the comedy department, I liked it more because it was a really good romance series. It had some funny moments, but it also had a lot of drama too. I disagree about Azumanga Daioh though, I thought it was hilarious.

I definitely agree with Naruto, it's actually gotten to the point where I make a point of NOT watching it. This is also because it doesn't fit my normal tastes, but I have liked shows that didn't fit my normal tastes and a few features of Naruto sound somewhat interesting, but I still won't watch it on principle.
It's like I also used to refuse to read Harry Potter, though I got over that after seeing the first movie, though I wasn't hooked until POA, but that's really another story.
I did really enjoy Azumanga Daioh, but I definitely can see how it would fall flat for some people, it's a really specific type of comedy, and even non-specific comedy doesn't work for everyone.
For shoujo, I think perhaps Yu Watase and CLAMP (despite the fact that I personally love them) both get overexposed, though hopefully not to the point of some of your examples.

Gee, I woulda thought Full Metal Panic gets a little "overexposed", I see lots of posts for that series. I think Gantz started out okay, but after Kato died, I stopped reading it.[/spoiler]

Berserk well deserves the inside hype it is getting. It simply is an amazing series, and while some people tend to not like it, it depends mostly on their preferences for certain characteristics in a title. Some people dont like an over-use of violence and the many disturbing scenes in Berserk. Doesn`t change the fact that the story is solid, interesting and with memorable characters many people can relate to. Plus, as I see it, most fans only know the anime series, and never got deeper in the manga.

Yeah, but after the flashback arc don't you think the scenes are being put in more for shock value over what enhances the story line?

Also agree with Naruto. I read the first few chapters and just could not get into it. There were some things I did enjoy (I really liked Kakashi), but there wasn't enough to hold my interest.
Gonna nominate Fullmetal Alchemist, too. I'll admit it's a good title, but it does fall under the definition given in the first post.

Naruto doesn't really get good until the second volume in the Hidden Village of the Mist arc (a.k.a. the Zabuza Arc). The first few chapters were so-so at best.

Naruto has been licensed in Norway now. From what I've seen an heard I guess it's a good series, but I doubt I'll ever get into it. I already feel I know all about it even if I haven't picked up a single volume.
I agree there's too many hardcore Berserk fanboys hyping the title to heaven and back, but I still feel it's too massive and well done to be ruined by this alone.
My biggest dissapointment due to overexposed manga so far has got to be
Ichigo 100%. After several seinen mangas I was looking for some lighthearted entertainment and decided to try this out as people went on about how it was the "funniest, most heartwarming, manga ever". It's a long fall when hundreds of people promise you a life-changing experience and you suddenly find out the product being promoted is not for you.
It's true that hype can ruin a series, although I notice it more when it comes to liveaction movies distributed by big companies who don't know where to stop.

Sorry, but it is hyped up too much. While I do indeed love it and consider it one of the best mangas published in english right now (possibly Japanese), the fact that it's number one on the ANN manga chart shows it gets hyped up. While they're not noticible when your caught up in the story, it has flaws.
Anyways, most of the really over-exposed titles have been mentioned. Gantz is good, but the fact it's the first "adult" title people read tends to lend to the hype around it. Naruto is pretty obvious, though I much prefer it to something like Bleach. I know I'll get flamed, but Fruits Basket is overhyped. It's above average, but there are better shojo titles out there that don't have to rely on the exact same melodramatic dialouge repeated over and over again. Loveless is pretty mediocre for being featured in the top 50 list at ANN (I suspect much of its praise comes from yaoi fangirls, though I've only read a single volume).

What I don't get is the love for the Jinchuu arc. It gets better eventually, but there's like two volumes worth of the shittest, most unbelievable "battle" to slog through first.
Enishi:"Ok, here's the battle plan - I'm going to sit in this baloon while you guys attack Kenshin and friends. Remember, one at a time! If you see that another guys fighting, then sit down and relax until that duel is over. Remember to give the medicine woman sometime time to heal people, and don't attack her, or anybody else standing around doing nothing. Also make sure that when you are fighting, you are in full view of everyone - they will stand around and just watch...."

Oh come on now, good sir, something's got to be number one or else you can't have a top 10 list, now can you? So just because it hit number one doesn't really make it overhyped to me. I went into the manga with zero of it or any of the hype, and after reading up to volume 31, I can definitely see why it gets the hype.
But everyone's got different tastes, and even if mine are the best, diversity is what makes us interesting. I don't like it because it's "cool" or "violent", I just appreciate the plot and character evolution. In fact, Berserk is the only series I've ever read where I would be happy if it never ended. Otherwise I dislike long series'.
Huh, that was pretty pointless.
As far as overhyping goes, though, maybe FMA... then again, I do like the manga. I'd say the anime is, only because of the lame-o second half.
I have come to the conclusion that nothing in this post has any point.

There is one manga/anime that is probably more hyped up than any other, and that is Inuyasha... I'm sorry to all of you who loved it, but compared to Takahashi's Ranma 1/2, it just doesn't measure up. I read the series from one of my friends and was overall, horribly dissapointed. it just doesn't live up to it's hype... but somehow it is still probably the most popular manga that there is.

I agree that Inu-yasha's overhyped, but I'm curious to know why you think it doesn't measure up to Ranma 1/2. Is it because you prefer Rumiko Takahashi's wacky humor series to her darker fantasy stuff? Then I'd understand why you'd be disappointed. Story and genre-wise, alot of her series are very different from one another, so you can't expect the same sort of material from each one. Mermaid Saga in particular is extremely different from what she normally does.

I guess that part of my reasoning is that, but i also tend to like dark fantasies... i just wasn't really impressed with inu
