Depends on many factors: how talented is the one who made it, what kind of figure it is, resin or plastic, what does mean "custom" talking about a figure (just painting, or the whole new figure) etc.

I saw some Evangelion customs on internet and they were awsome. But they were resin so I was not interested.

Isn't resin better quality and usually painted/toned better than plastic? I'm new to the whole character figurine thing (minus Gundam).

Yes they are, but they are also more fragile. I personally don't like resin stuff since last year I had a bad experience with a Star Wars resin figure which had a crack.

Now I know what you mean. My Saber PVC resin statue is great but it has a very small crack at the top of the head. It's not noticeable unless you look really closely but it was still somewhat upsetting. I took the utmost care to make sure it wouldn't get damaged but perhaps it was already damaged in the box. The quality is second to none, but I guess you can't have everything.

If you're talking about an unlicensed product, then you should probably take your discussion elsewhere.

I don't think Asianman was talking about pirate products or bootlegs (even if I had to admit that some bootlegs are really cool and there are collectors who like them), because from bootlegs you cannot make customs - the bootlegs are somekind of a custom themselves.

But for example look at these custom painted Evangelion model kits, they are beautiful, I wouldn't be able to paint them like that...
