Hmm, I remember a guy from XSeed saying once that for some reason voice actor contracts for games in Japan can be extremely draconian, which is why getting audio in them can be an issue. Guess stuff like this can also be a reason.

Not only that, sometime Japanese video game (and anime) OSTs get cut out from overseas release (this happen to several Tales game). Yeah Japan tend to be overpricey and they don't play fair when it comes to releasing their product overseas.

ANN wrote:
Payne attributed the problem to licensing fees for use of the games' voice cast and the voice actors' studios asking for as much as half of the original pay out for the additional release. Payne elaborated that the situation extends to most otome games and "voice actor studios looking to profit from any secondary use of their voices [are] unwilling to negotiate."

This didn't really surprise me after reading it. Yeah that's my problem with Japan, they tend to be overpricey and they put too much restriction. That's why we can't get nice thing like J-dramas in the US and outside of Japan because the Japanese entertainment biz just don't play fair at all. That's my criticism of Japan when it comes to exporting product overseas, overpricey and too much restriction. Crying or Very sad Evil or Very Mad Mad Anime cry

pretty bad news for otome-game players who don't know japanese and are always hoping for an english release...

well, now we know for sure it's not the western industry the biggest problem(?)

it remembers me at that problem of licensing J-dramas outside of Japaneseàn, pretty much the same....

I don't think it's happened in a while but it took certain number of sales of certain visual novels for MangaGamer to get the voice-overs for those titles.

Yeah as I said, Japanese industry don't play fair and this is why other Asian countries (South Korea and Taiwan) with their pop culture export are winning more fans around the world then Japan. At least those countries don't put draconian restriction unlike Japan.

I wouldn't trust this company with getting anything done promptly though. They've been translating "Starless" for longer than I can remember, with no end in sight. They're a great company, for sure, but their translation process is pretty freaking slow.

Same here, but I have to wonder what they mean by it, exactly. Are the actors more easygoing about having their voices released? Are the actors less experienced, meaning they charge cheaper prices?
On a related note, there are BL games in the west? Honest-to-God licensed BL games? I must have been living under a rock, because I've never seen one.

There's at least two or three but they're terribly outdated. Honestly if someone says they like Enzai or Absolute Obedience I'm just going to assume they either have very low standards or haven't tried anything else. It's part of the cycle of visual novels made for women sell so badly in English - Game company purchases cheap license for a mediocre game > no one wants to buy it > "Oh see, there's no market here for that sort of thing here!"

It's nice that English companies might finally be having a wake up call if they try to get a couple Nitro+Chiral titles or something.

It has less to do with the experience and how easygoing they are about it and more to do with what industry manages them. Erotic visual novels are still part of the porn industry, and the porn industry is not exactly known for having a healthy set of popular, known voice actresses/actors in it that can capitalize the work's sales. Voice actresses in non-porn things tend to be just that more well-known and popular, and the people who manage them come from a much more profitable industry involving music and such.

Aah, that's too bad. But yeah, if they tread into BL territory, they might have a better chance of selling something like Dramatical Murder or another Nitro-Chiral game. And considering that they already have some Nitroplus titles on their site, they might be more open to the idea (not holding my breath or anything, but...)

Thanks for the explanation. For some reason, I just assumed the actors were the same ones that did mainstream anime/video game voices.
