With the mild performance of The Wind Rises at the U.S. box office (only about $4 million), a lot of people are assuming that because of this Disney passed on Takahata's newest film. But I think that's just kneejerk reaction on the part of sites like The Ghibli Blog (whose articles I always find questionable). From this article I've seen, it looks like there's a different reason behind this acquisition:
I think THIS is the real reason. I don't think Disney would want to be involved in a film that features such content, would you? I think that's the REAL reason. |

More likely, it's because Disney doesn't like to sell Ghibli "art" films that don't have Miyazaki's name on them, since most of their US parent audiences think the two are one and the same. (Unless it has a clear "kiddy" angle, like Arietty or Cat Returns.) I can see Disney selling the "fairytale" angle of Kaguya--unless it gets too Takahata-artsy--but I don't expect Disney to rush Pon Poko to Blu, even though it got a perfectly decent DVD release. And even that's if you're not too pessimistic about how Disney interpreted DVD sales of My Neighbors the Yamadas. (Which I liked, thank you.) |

Oh I have no pessimism about Disney's handling of Ghibli, period. I think they did an excellent job doing all of them (except, in my honest opinion, The Wind Rises, which wasn't a BAD dub, per say, just an average one).
It's just that I saw an article from the Ghibli Blog declaring Miyazaki D.O.A. in America because of how The Wind Rises is doing. Now excuse me for talking smack, but I don't particularly like that website. I think there still is a following for Miyazaki, but I don't think that particular film would have been a huge draw for audiences no matter what, because it's more of an "art" film instead of a "crowd-drawing" one like any of Miyazaki's others. Even the folks at DVDizzy's forums are thinking that Disney and Ghibli are parting ways. I honestly don't see any evidence of that despite GKids getting "Poppy Hill" and "Kagura". |

Oh, lord--What is this, 1999, and "Princess Mononoke flopped, because it played in 55 theaters and nobody knew about it when it went 'wide' to 300!"? I'm beginning not to like them either. 
There's some fan fear that Disney's going to cut back on the marketability of their deal, and give to parent/kid audiences that which is the parent/kid audiences' and give to the art-indie distributor that which is the art-indie distributors'... But again, until something actually HAPPENS with Kaguya, we won't know that. It could literally go either way, unlike the fan sites who almost gleefully want to predict death just so they can "get themselves used to disappointment" ahead of time. (Anyone who owns a 3D TV set knows what I'm talking about.) |

Oh yeah, seriously, I hate these sort of sites. Those are the same ones that try to find fault with ANY of the Ghibli dubs Disney has done and blow any issue out of proportion making the dub seem more "unlistenable" than it actually is. As I said, I didn't care for "The Wind Rises" as a dub, but that doesn't mean it's unlistenable. On the contrary. It still is. It's just not my favorite, that's all. There hasn't been any single dub Disney has done that can be counted as unbearable, and even the ones where they added some pieces of music and dialogue to, well, they got Ghibli's permission to do it. Where's the ruin in that?
I never liked the Ghibli Blog either. The guy who owns the site has even been quite nasty to all the Ghibli dubs Disney has done save Spirited, Howl, Totoro, Ponyo, and Wind, but he says the others are garbage as if it's a fact. (Trust me, I've seen him trash all the other Ghibli dubs, even on IMDB; one time he even said that "if I was REALLY rotten, I'd say 'Warriors of the Wind' was better" than the redub of Nausicaa!) Some people say he's being honest and maybe he is, but that "honesty" also carries a bit of bias too, at least from what I've seen. |
