Well, Hellsing volume 5, it turns out that spoiler[ Alucard dreams of Bruce Willis?] Wow, that was random... I guess I will have to wait until I've read further to see if that's a recurring theme. Certainly entertained me.
Why is it that manga tends to have entertaining little quips like that while anime doesn't? I'm also thinking about the manga of Ghost in the Shell, which has a far vaster amount of comic moments (not difficult as the anime has roughly none.) Berserk also has a couple which are clearly absent from the anime. spoiler[I'm thinking about puck and some little in jokes there.] Do you think manga is a medium which allows more personal touches from the author? I often find odd little comments in the margins and things like that hilariously entertaining... |

They're entertaining alright, and sometimes notoriously tricky to translate. This goes for both Hellsing and Berserk, two manga I'm closely familiar with. They're both very challenging, and I'm glad you enjoy them.
I was always under the impression that Alucard had his Bruce Willis dream because one of his guns is called the Jackal. That was also the name of one of Willis' films, and you see him holding the control box for the automated machine gun in one of the manga panels. This whole scene parallels how Seras had her "Baron Harkonnen" dream in vol. 3. That one was just as screwy, with its David Lynch references that I almost missed as I never watched Twin Peaks... Thank God for the Wikipedia. It aids me on an almost daily basis. Ah, Puck. The cute little elf. He presents some of the most challenging aspects when translating Berserk, as his humor is often topical and anachronistic. Isidro joins in the fray later on in the story as well. I agree with you that anime tends to cut out the side humor much of the time. Though sometimes it's still there, just subtle. In the Hellsing next episode previews, Baron Harkonnen is seen floating around and spouting nonsense a lot, though they never come out and say who he is so you either have to recognize him or have read the manga. |
