Nobody could've done Ikari Shinji in that level besides Ogata-san. She's just perfect as Ikari Shinji. It's not really an exaggeration to say that EVA became a success because of her.

She's like a cutest jailbait jii-san girl. Really though, there is plenty of truth from what she says. Actors get immersed in the role, and since EVA is so twisted, the show kind of makes you. That is being a character. I know, it's cliche. Just don't go crazy too much Ogata. And screaming a lot is never a good thing. |

I'm not surprised at all, considering the kind of show Eva is. That said, she should feel good that her role as Shinji is one of the greatest anime VA/seiyuu performances of all time, imo.

I wonder if she's saying this right now because she's recording for Eva Rebuild 4? That's my hope, anyways
I've been re-watching Evangelion over the last few months in recognition of it being the "Year of Evangelion." Hoo boy, this show is so much more affecting when viewed through the lens of depression. This has been a pretty rough personal year for me and I've found such a deeper level of immersion, heartbreak, and catharsis watching the show; it's like a mini-therapy session at times (which, according to Anno, the production pretty much was). This has been my first time watching the show all the way through subtitled, and while I have nostalgic affection for the dub, I've gotta say the Japanese cast, especially Ogata-san, really hit it out of the park. No doubt she's still emotionally drained from playing Shinji---it's exhausting just to listen to that poor kid's thoughts. As much as I love her performance as Haruka, Shinji is Ogata-san's masterpiece. The seiyuu for Asuka is also fantastic; it's hard to not think of how tense recording got, especially considering some of the stories came out! It's funny to me that so many people hated the last chunk of Evangelion, when it got dark and introspective; that section is what resonates to me most, and has overall been what enamored the series to me as much as it has. North America needs to bring on the Blu-Rays, already! |

Yes, well, if it is so much screaming and crying enough to give the actress a headache. I don't even want to think about it. Hopefully they will cut some scenes short.

My favourite exchange with Ogata:
Nakata Atsuhiko: That reminds me, in the old movie version there was a scene where Shinji was masturbating. How was that recorded? Ogata: Hahaha. It’s obvious but that was my first time doing something like that (laughs). I thought to myself that I can’t get this wrong just because I’m female! So I talked to Tachiki Fumihiko who voices Gendou and said “Dad, this is my first time, I’m not sure if I will be able to do this right. So if I got it wrong, please tell me” (in Shinji voice) Nakata: Hahaha! Ogata: After recording ended, we went “How did I do, dad?” “You did well, Shinji” “Yes! I got praised by my dad!” |

Ogata is a great VA, but not as Shinji. She was great in Sailor Moon as a female character.

I love how she dubs Shinji; it's clear that she puts her heart in her acting, so it's not surprise that she is somewhat affected by the character.
