Although this was initially posed to the videogame industry, what factors must be considered to be labelled as ‘Animé/Manga Literate'?
Firstly, what qualifies some as Animé/Manga Literate’? Would one need to be cultured in the history of those industries or can anyone with no prior knowledge qualify? Also, what could this mean in terms of those who review Animé & Manga, are they even qualified? Finally, In terms of academic study, what particular intellectual properties would you consider essential if you wanted to become Animé/Manga Literate’? Is AstroBoy essential as it formed the basis of modern Manga or can something such as Deathnote provide just as much relevance? |

if it were that simple anyone with computer that can learn easily everything about manga and anime could be literate.
or maybe a teacher exist that knows everything because he has been there. but really when you think about it. can anyone be a literate of a subculture? |

That's a really difficult question to answer. It's pretty much impossible to make a list of manga you have to read or anime you have to watch to be considered "literate" enough to be a critic. I think what's more important is...
1. Breadth of knowledge -- One needs to have seen anime and manga from across the entire spectrum of genres in order to be able to tell how any one work compares within its own genre as well as its quality in general. If one only watches, say, action shows like Naruto and Dragon Ball Z, he or she won't be able to compare the quality of a show from an entirely different genre like, say, Maison Ikkoku or Kimagure Orange Road that are more subtle in execution but among the best of their genre. 2. Objectivity and depth of knowledge -- Anyone can say "Well, I liked this show" or "I didn't like that show," but a critic has to be able to deconstruct the material and view it objectively. While everyone has personal biases, the best critics have a deep knowledge of the medium itself so that they can judge a film based on its merits an contextualize it among its peers. They can point out the formulaic aspects of a show and whether they help or hinder the final product. They can identify lazy shortcuts. It takes knowledge not just of one's own likes and dislikes, but also the creative process, and how those creative decisions affect the final work. 3. Historical knowledge -- Many anime and manga fans know precious little about any series more than 10 years old, but in order to be an effective critic, one needs to be familiar with manga's history. Yes, there are plenty of things you can gain from reading Astro Boy that you'd never get from reading Death Note, but the reverse is also true. It goes back to "breadth of knowledge".....those who don't know the classics can't point out what new series is a tired retread, but those who only know the classics may overlook the unique twists a modern series has to offer. There's no master list of books you have to read or shows you have to watch. The key is a thirst to watch/read as much as possible, and an ability to identify the relationships between them. It's certainly not something that can happen overnight. |
