On an impulse buy I picked this title up yesterday. I'd never really seen a show from this genre/character designer before, I think the creator's name is Koge-Donbo or something. But I've always liked the funny SD drawings. Bleh, this show is not that good, not my thing. The ending theme surprised me though, it's "Equal Romance"...that same OLD ending song from Ranma 1/2, originally by Japanese JPOP group Coco (which is super old and long gone, now). Brings back memories..."Equal Romance" and "Full of Memories (Omoide ga Ippai)", both by Coco, were 2 of Ranma's best OP/ED songs. Someday I'll have to dig out my old CD collection and see if I have the CDs with these songs on them, it's been so long I can't even remember what I own. I have crappy 128 kbits/s mp3s of these (which I might have even made myself, I can't remember), but that's too inferior quality for me these days.
Anyways, I was just wondering if re-using "old" Japanese JPOP songs is a fad with Koge-Donbo shows or something...since I'm not familiar with his works in general. I think the opening theme to Little Snow Fairy Sugar (which also appears to be a Koge-Donbo show, just from looking at the pictures) is also an old JPOP song by the group Wink, also later re-sung by Yoko Ishida, etc....but originally another semi-oldie like "Equal Romance". |

Yes it is.
Her works. Koge-Donbo is a woman. It isn't something they do with her shows though. It seems it's just the group ("Prière") who likes to reuse songs. The opening theme by them is also a previously used song ("Heartbeat" was originally in English by a Swedish band called "Friends"). |

Thanks for the correction on Koge-Donbo's gender. I couldn't tell from the "name" and I debated for a sec whether to write "his" or "his/her" in my first post. I figured this way I'd get to find out Koge-Donbo's gender, and I did.
But I'm surprised I was wrong. Usually I have artist gender deciphering powers, from merely looking at what they have drawn. But my power isn't perfect. Koge-Donbo tricked me! Regarding the music, what about Little Snow Fairy Sugar then? That opening was by Yoko Ishida of an old Wink song. Coincidence? |

Coincidence. Can't think of any other works of hers that have reused older songs. |

You're not stupid (far from it actually). Was just a misunderstanding. |

I never realized before that "Sugar Baby Love" was originally a non-Japanese song. I thought Wink's version was the original.
What about "Equal Romance" then? Is Coco's version the original? Yay, I dug through my CD collection and I had the Ranma OP songs CD, ED songs CD, and Doco OAV vocal songs CD...so I have most of the versions of Equal Romance and Full of Memories that Ranma generated. Except the karaoke versions of Equal Romance and Full of Memories I don't have that's on a CD I don't own (only have mp3s)...and the Uta Karuta CD has the Doco version of Equal Romance on it which I don't own either. There's probably been other Ranma CD re-releases or collections since then though....wonder what they have? Also I wonder if I can find Coco music somewhere? They are old, I might not be able to find their stuff. |
