The story did in fact lose its way, but I still enjoyed it, despite it being a bit messy.

It took me a good few episodes to realize that the OP song was from the original series, just in Japanese. It's still stuck in my head. The character designs where very interesting but the heavy use of CGI for the original characters was a bit jarring. I thought it was more of a stylistic choice more than anything.

I wasn't under the impression that anything in Macross Zero was derived from any real culture.

I'm probably one of the bigger Aquarion fans in the entire anime community and I found myself enjoying MOE enough even if I feel like the plot became way too dense and convoluted and kind of lost sight of the real story by the end...it probably didn't help that unlike past entries it's the first season to only have 1-cour.

But at least it's not Logos, I guess?

I do admit hearing the original theme again hit hard in the nolstalgia even if the OG AKINO version was better.

The original Aquarion was also a show that started off strong and became convoluted towards the end and I still really liked that. So while it wasn't as good as previous entries I didn't feel like MOE was that bad and I still had a fun time watching it. I just wish Crunchyroll would put the previous series back on streaming as they all expired.

Series composition-wise, I think only EVOL was well-written?

I generally liked their themes, but pacing-wise, MOE has a lot of questionable cuts.

I did find it slightly telling that this is the first Aquarion anime they didn't bother to dub...

although the original as well as evol definitely had their flaws which was why the series did not get traction with fans. especially with the messy love triangle which was pretty obviously to mecha fans that they were trying to do a macross with that.

Not enough mecha action and that there was was quite boring; launch sequence then flying at the enemy doing ineffectual strafing then unite for a couple of sword clashes before losing. Repeat same stock footage in every episode of the season.

THIS.

It really made me wonder if they understand why mecha fans watch mecha anime. It made me think back a LOT about the flaws of the previous series too.

Me and all the mecha fans I know do not watch mecha anime for The Action, actually.
