I read the full series and the series was basically carried by the MC best friend/rival. Yeah the MC handled the world-changing events but the rival got all the interesting plots. Plus the reveal of why the demon king was trying to go back in time was really dissapoint for me.

Huh. They just called it “New Saga” in English and not “New Saga Plus”? That feels like a weird choice — “Tsuyokute” evokes something very specific.

Anyway, it is interesting to see how this series comes across now, because the WN started in 2012 (one month after Re:Zero and six months before Mushoku Tensei), when this sort of plot wasn’t nearly as played-out. Which probably has something to do with why it can still be reasonably effective playing the premise straight, because it sees it as novel enough to provide a genuine dramatic hook, and doesn’t need to gild it with more wackiness and an extra 40 characters in the title to grab eyeballs.

(Judging from the distribution of story IDs in my spreadsheet, I’d say Narou was at best half as active then as it would be in 2020. Not surprising; this was a few months before webnovels hit the big time with the SAO anime.)

Enjoy it while it lasts, sadly the series only gets worse as it progresses.

One of the most anticipated series that eventually falls off a cliff.

Is the original source material still unavailable? I've always been curious about how the novel turned out.
