I do remember this as an OAV series that European then-licensor company Kiseki (don't know if they still exist) released on VHS tapes in a box alongside the Clash of the Bionoids movie. I do remember enjoying it at the time, although that might partially be because anime was still a bit new to me at the time, and that package was the only thing I had watched of the Macross franchise as a whole. I thnk the only thing potentially negative I could say about it was that it kinda rethreaded the Macross storyline down to the letter. (With the main protag's rather odd decision to get romantic with a woman he had barely interacted with as opposed to... well, I guess he hadn't spent THAT much more time with Ishtar, but at least it was SOME time, at the very least.)

Thanks for the mention of the Bluray release in the review. Maybe I'll pick it up, if nothing else to reaquaintance myself with an OAV I haven't seen in a looooong time and complement my Macross DVD set.

I'll probably be checking this out in my big Macross re-watch.

I finally ran out of patience with Kawamori's timeline and came crawling back to Macross II as my go-to sequel.

The positives are that it looks really nice for the most part, has great music, and does feel of a piece with the original TV series. I like the characters well enough, and enjoy the story for what it is. This is also a good chance to recommend watching the movie "Roman Holiday" at least once. Why suggest that here? Hrrm, no reason...

The negative is that there just aren't enough episodes to fully flesh out what they're doing. The ending is rushed, and as the review points out Hibiki just suddenly gets together with someone I hadn't even considered as an option -- uh, when did that happen?

The screenwriter for the series also wrote its novelization: 5 volumes for just six episodes. I'd love to read those someday, and find out if it's a more complete telling of this story. The length suggests it might be.

I feel that Hulu needs to get access to the dub. I was severely disappointed because this is one of the few 90's anime that got a truly stellar English dub, and I watched it in English back then.
