I remember this. Watched in dubbed in spanish as a kid, the same way they'd air Doraemon and Ninja Hattori-kun.

More or less nothing will have to be done regarding Maria (which is how you're supposed to read her name), outside of maybe toning down some of the gags regarding her privates (which more or less was how Ryo-san would convince others that Maria was trans, as a last resort). But, also, eventually the manga had Maria become a woman completely (apparently due to magic), likely because Osamu Akimoto saw that it was simply easier to just turn Maria into a woman than potentially offend readers by accident as time went on. Honestly not surprised that everyone's getting recast, though I can absolutely see LaSalle Ishii getting cast as Ryo-san's father as a wink & nod to the OG anime. |

The anime also had her simply going through HRT and surgery because...that's what trans people do.
