Interesting... I didn't expect anything from this anime.
The manga can't be far ahead, so what is this?

The new characters in the key visual are from the manga. Maybe there's enough material for the next arc?

At first, I thought the films were due to a lack of source material, like how Black Lagoon had the OVA series. But 3 films would cover the same amount of material, if not more, as a single cour season would. Unless they are spacing them out quite far apart.

They are in the manga but they also feature prominently in the most recent chapters of the side story manga, so perhaps they are adapting that first before transitioning into the beginning of the next main manga arc. This would give the manga more time to get more material for the later movies.

I got the impression from previous articles that the author was focusing on working with the anime production side for a while after the second season, so that the manga and anime could finish the story at the same time.

Looks like it's nearing the end. The manga hadn't ended (when I last checked) but a movie trilogy should provide plenty of space for an ending and however many chapters that takes.

If anything, perhaps a bit too much space, but there's some skipped-over side stuff that could be expanded on.

Edit:
Ok... *way more* than too much space. Season 2 covered chapters 39-60 and the manga is up to chapter 71. Even with a movie's worth of side stories, I've gotten a sense that it's nearing an endpoint, so I'm not sure how they'll get two movies out of the main story.

Hopefully it'll be in theatres for at least a weekend in Canada.

nope.

manga isnt that far ahead really.
tl;dr without spoilers:
basically they meet new girl & others, do intros, then go down & shit happens.
not near enough for new arc yet.

sad part is this new 1 is my favorite character..but my god they smexualized her so badly its hard to read at times.

*deep sigh* On the one hand MiA has a great story but all this sexualization of under age girls (and boy robot) has tested my patience. It's character designs along with it's great (if hard to read at times) art just makes it worse. Bad enough that Bondrewd is still alive and will most likely still be alive when the story is done.

New content. One of the characters shown is a new character that shows up in the manga from where the second season ends.

Manga is ahead 4 volumes now, 11 chapters. Don’t know how, if these chapters are bigger than before or other reason (personally didn’t read).
While one season of the anime covered on average 4 volumes or 20+ chapters (again, early volumes have more chapters).

The subject of the topic is a movie. For the context, Down of the deep covered 13ch or 2 volumes.

So…there is definitely enough material for 1 movie. And it seems that adaptation will continue with movies rather than with seasons.

It's several film projects that will adapt the manga up to it's end. These are not recaps nor original material.

There will not be another TV season (though theses films could be cut up and aired as a series a loooong time from now.)

The manga is heading towards the climactic final layer of the abyss, so I suspect it will end before the final movie releases, and I believe a film trilogy will be enough.

There is so far enough manga content to adapt into one and a half films.

The first film will be similar to Season 2 - new characters/prequel story before ultimately returning to our main cast.

The second film will be similar to the Dawn of the Deep Soul movie, where the main cast attempt to reach a new layer and encounter another of the white whistles. The manga so far is in the middle of this story. The manga will likely finish this arc before this film enters full production.

Then I suspect the third and final film will complete the story alongside the manga.

I'd expect the release schedule to be 2026, 2028, and 2030.
