I'm honestly not surprised since this has been the standard on PC for years now.
Sucks because they killing off the 2nd hand market. They'll probably not drop prices as easily now either since a lot of disc versions of games are cheaper than the digital version. |

I don’t even know what to say, this is awful. Hopefully the backlash makes them reconsider.

They said GTA6 having no disc was going to be the true death knell for new physical console games. Looks like it was correct.
As a console game collector, it's weird to see your hobby go extinct in front of you. Yes there is plenty of older stuff to collect of course, but not having anything brand new in the near future is going to feel very strange. |

I'm expecting this to carry across Sony as a whole. We already know that its home video production through Crunchyroll is minuscule compared to where things were before Sony gobbled up the industry, and that is much smaller than the effects of not doing game discs in terms of Sony's business.
Collecting physical media has been a key aspect of my enjoyment of both anime and games for decades, and it's incredibly sad to see "industry trends" that the industry itself pushed for its own interests take that away. |

This...sucks >.<...I've always hated digital , i still only buy Cds and Blu rays, i very rarely buy digital anything unless its VNS on the PC.
Guess this means the PS6 wont play my blu rays anymore if they dont have a disc slot neither will it be backwards compatible with any Ps4 or Ps5 discs.... |

that kinda sucks...like, i guess i know why they're doing it, but still..
it was kinda fun going into retro game stores and buying copies of games at discounted prices. i know that won't just suddenly go away, but again, as someone who had reservations on buying new games (cough cough, saros) for high prices, not being able to buy the physical and sell it if its not for me kinda sucks... this does remind me...maybe i should buy that copy of rift apart...i mean, it's $30, and it's a pretty good game... |

Well looks like I'm never buying a sony console ever again. I refuse to buy a console if there are no physical media. I'd hope that this would mean their sales get heavily reduced and they reverse the decision, but unfortunately I don't think general audiences care enough about this for a boycott

I think so too. I had thought that the ps6 would have a separate disc drive like the ps5 pro, but if Sony isn't going to be doing discs anymore, then I don't see them messing with a disc drive just for backwards compatability. Xbox does have a digital system for that, but I'm expecting Sony to decide that it's not big deal to them since people will just have to hold onto their ps4/5s forever (and keep them working).
Unfortunately. Companies did a lot to push this to happen, but customers fed into it every step. Nintendo is at a point where they were testing people's commitment with physical copies being more expensive than digital, and Sony is skipping right over that. Also, this announcement comes a day after yet another example of Sony removing digital purchases from people's libraries. An agreement with a content provider in the UK expired, and people who bought from it lose their purchases with no refunds. But don't worry, folks. You can always re-download those things that YOU bought...right? Game consoles consistently launch with less storage than needed in the face of ever-growing game files, and the solution to that is for the customer to go and buy more storage. Much like RAM, storage prices are incredibly high thanks to AI companies. So, you're going to be left with purchases that can be taken away at any time, while also either shelling out to buy more storage to hold onto the downloads or rely on the benevolence of corporations to maintain access until the time that they deem it not worth it to do so. BTW, the PS3 and Vita stores are closing July 2027, so yeah, stock up on that storage because you WILL NOT have access forever. I could easily see this situation being taken advantage of by third parties. Access is gone, no backwards compatibility. Sounds like a recipe to sell you a re-release of your old games to me. We all saw this future coming, but it hits real hard nonetheless.
Personally, I'm probably not buying consoles anymore. I simply don't buy digital games on consoles. I got a few games on Switch which didn't have physical versions to begin with, got physical versions later or I just wasn't aware. I have a beefy PC, fortunately built just months before the RAM crisis, which will suit my needs. Steam sales alone are actually worth the digital-only purchases for me. For me there is no real point to having multiple digital-only devices. We'll see what this future has in store for the industry and especially consumers. This shouldn't be surprising for anyone. PS5 had a completely digital version, and PS5 Pro doesn't come with a disc drive by default. Majority of their sales are digital and not physical (85% from a quick online search). I just expected that they'd wait until PS7 to fully say no more physical though since this does gives Xbox an opportunity to now come out and say they're not abandoning physical which would give them a strong point over Playstation.

The sales of physical to digital are sadly on their side and Xbox has already come very close to giving up on print runs for their games early into the life of the Series. Only big games got discs and limited printings at that. Some suspected that the next gen would be the last console generation with optional physical media for selected games but we already accelerated into that dystopia. Don´t wait up for a heavily marked-up disc version of GTA VI either in 2027. Hearing about that code in a box was the wake-up call for me. If buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing but single-player-only PlayStation games on PC are also officially cancelled. They thought this through. The EU won´t save us either as they shrugged off Stop Killing Games. Only Nintendo is left now and their releases are all 10€/$ more expensive on cartridge. Pokopia also only got a Key-Card.
In more positive news. The Vita itself is hackable and PS3 emulation has reached a solid state. |

That's not a good look when recently that Sony itself removed 500 movie/film titles that even users already bought from the Playstation Store with no plans of refunds or compensation at all. Also, this part Sony said is questionable:
That's not a good argument if you just removed movie titles that people legally bought digitally from your Playstation store and not giving them refunds or any form of compensation. I'm also very skeptical of this comment Sony made given the way that digital files aren't guarantee or even immune to decomposition, or even file corruptions. Also, I recalled a 2023 article from Hollywood Reporter about the concern about digital movie and TV show digital files could get decayed over time reminiscent of celluloid film which could lead to lost films and lost media. That can include video game too if they don't have a good digital backup, and that's why physical media is very important to me. Let me quote the Hollywood Reporter article I linked above:
See the part I bolded and underlined in the above quote. That's exactly what we're seeing in the Sony PlayStation Store's removal of movies/films and TV shows that even PS owners bought digitally from the store and now they can't own the digital movie and TV shows they bought legally. I also want to quote this CNBC article from 2023, and I agree with this assessment:
I want to also include this 2023 Hollywood Reporter article about the importance of physical media, and why streaming and digital owners could have a problem for most of streaming subscribers and digital ownership in general. I've said it time and time again I have a major love-hate relationship when it comes to streaming, and I'll say this again:
And now you factor in companies like Rockstar Game, and Sony wanting to end physical media and this makes it worse. If Sony is permanently ending physical media, and also at the same time removing movie/film titles from the PlayStation Store that even PS owners even bought are no longer can't be watched even if you purchased it online. Then this is not a good look, and there's also the preservation of digital files, how can the game developer be sure that the game won't decay or worse suffer from a glitch or corruption in the data that can't be reversed or even fixed. Now do you understand why we need physical media for. I really worried for the future of physical media, and maybe just maybe I'm hoping to see enough of a backlash from people that have to deal with the nightmare of streaming and digital ownership to come realize that we need physical media more then ever in this changing digital world. Literally physical media was the reason why I argued that consoles were superior to PC actually. If they're getting rid of that, then I don't see why I shouldn't just be on Steam plus GOG. Granted, I most likely still get the PS6, but it'd just be for exclusives, which is probably gonna be only Sony first party games. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if I just have a PS6 with no games for a while because that. Just spending the money on hardware that will be waiting for the software modding scene to mature than actually treating the system as Sony intends it.
Also, fudge, PS3 and Vita's closing this month?! |
