Generally I'll try to read at least two volumes before totally panning something. sometimes I'll dislike something enough to know one volume is enough. But with Blame for example I'm on the fence. The art is neat even if the action bits aren't well done, and the story seems like it has potential. even if I hate the style of story telling it adopts (no narrative at all), so one more volume and if it's picks up great, if not I'll move on. So what are your stipulations?

I'd say I'm about the same, usually two volumes to see if I like something (since the first one usually has to setup the plot so it isn't always the best volume to judge a series on).
That being said I have only run into one series that I couldn't even get that far and that would be FLCL. I've tried to read the first volume of that manga twice and neither time could I figure out what that plot was about or how it was supposed to fit together, I guess maybe it would make slightly more sense if I tried to read a bit more of it; but the first volume didn't in any way make me want to keep reading more. |

If you want anything to make sense, than no FLCL is not for you. Trust me it doesn't make anymore sense as it progresses either.

If I pick up the first volume of something and I don't like it, I won't get a second volume unless there's positive word of mouth, people saying "It gets better as the story goes along."

If I don't like the first volume, it's usually not worth my time. Of course, I'll read that volume over a couple times to see if maybe I just missed something (did that with Saiyuki and ended up loving it), but if it doesn't get any better after a few reads (Samurai Deeper Kyo) I won't bother with the rest of it.

Just like baseball it's 3 strikes you're out with manga/comics for me. Any new comic or manga series I read 3 issues/volumes and if it doesn't grab me it's out of there. I'm not Bill Gates so I can't buy everything. I generally read the first 3 in a bookstore and if I like the series I pick it up. Same goes for comics and graphic novels.

Hmmm... that's a tough one. Personally I tend to buy mangas in bulk cause it's cheaper and I usually get the whole series or a partial set of a series at a time. If I hate the first volume I'll still read the second and third and etc. It'll be hard to get in the mood of it, but I always read manga while doing laundry and or what not. So it's not that bad when you have nothing else to do. I just hate it when you get into a good manga and have to wait to read the next one. The funny thing is the one I am having the hardest time to read is Read or Die. I've finished everything I got after that series.

I always read three volumes to see if the series pulls me in. Only once has that guideline failed me (with Girl Got Game, where the climax was so stupid I actually gasped  ).

I have to like the first volume a least a bit in order to buy any more. There have been some series that I've bought the first few because I was interested enough to give it another chance, but in the end I've never really found a series that I really liked which didn't have me from volume one.

Same for me. The series has to have something going for it in order for me to continue. If the first volume doesn't interest me I don't see the point in going on. |

This is manga, right? Well, for manga, I'll usually read 1/3 of a series before deciding if it's worth my time to continue onward, or if it's so bad it doesn't deserve another chance. As I see it, if an author hasn't gotten a "feel" for his/her manga a third of the way through (clearly this would mean the longer the series, the more I have to read but the more likely an author has gotten a "groove") he/she isn't really qualified to keep my interest.
Thus far, the only shows that I've applied this rule to are 20th Century Boys and Fushigi Yuugi; almost everything else, even if I dislike it, I end up going fully through. |

I'll read through one volume of a title before making a decision on it. If I can't find something that hooks me, or if I feel that the author has no clue as to what they're doing, I'll drop it. Restarts are rare for me, as it takes several very good reviews to make me change my mind and read another volume.

Depends on how I'm reading it. If I'm reading it at a library, then I'll probably give it at least two volumes. Also, if I'm familiar with another work connected to it (like an anime) and really enjoy that work, I'll give the manga longer to warm up to me.
For manga I'm not too terribly familiar with, I normally only go one volume. I'll normally read part in the store before I buy it, too, unless I'm buying it to review it. |

Say I buy the first three volumes of a series, I will read those first three volumes even if I don't like the first volume and it's goodbuy to the series. If it's just one volume that I buy, then it will be one volume that makes me kiss the series goodbuy. In two instances I have bought a certain number of volumes for the series and not read through all of the books before getting rid of them. D.N. Angel and Mamotte Shugogetten! part 2. The first series I read the first two out of seven volumes and gave up. The second series I read the first 8 pages of the first volume of 4 volumes I had and said that was it.
