According to the ANN encyclopedia, 809 people have rated this show as a "masterpiece". I'm curious why so many people feel that this show isn't "very good" or "good" or "decent" but a "masterpiece"?

I'm also curious as to how people can give a show such a high rating when its still only in the middle of being broadcast.

Because people get very worked up and excited about the flavour of the week/month and therefore, declare things as masterpieces.

And I guess because it's good/people like it.

I guess I'm confused. If its good, then rate it as "good". Why "masterpiece"?

I cannot tell you how much I hope that people don't do it for the "flavor of the month" thing. For me personally, I won't rate something as masterpiece unless months later I am still thinking about it. Flavor of the month is very much antithetical to that.

Well, Death Note is a good series, and if you just rate it "good" rather than, "very good", "excellent" or "masterpiece", Death Note would just seem more like some other average anime series with a somewhat good rating. I personally gave Death Note a "masterpiece" rating not because of how Steventheeunuch stated with it being the "flavor of the week" thing,I gave it a "masterpiece" rating because of the clever storyline, well developed characters, plot and etc.

Does it really even matter? The topic question is constructive (what makes Death Note a masterpiece) but asking why people are rating it that isn't. Obviously people think it's a masterpiece, otherwise they would rate it something else. Is it at all complicated?

Most of the people who actally have cultured tastes won't give DN's anime above a Very Good, but the manga deserves an Excellent; it would have been a Masterpiece if it didn't have two low points that brought down the flow.

My theory is that a lot of the "newbies" everyone hates (though I'm not entirely sure why) who just come jump on the ship of state watch DN amidst the hype, look at the visuals, try to follow the dialogue but arrive at the conclusion of "lol deep" and just give it stellar ratings with a half-arsed viewing of the series.

In my view, only a few pieces deserve a "Masterpiece" rating, so maybe there should be some restriction on it; people are prone to vote something they like a lot with the highest rating they can, since they feel that's the only way they can tell others about it and make themselves look like someone important or meaningful. That kind of rating doesn't really benefit anyone.

As far as the ranking goes, only truely innovative, anime-original titles deserve Masterpiece ratings. That is, even something I dislike such as Evangelion could be plausibly be listed as a "Masterpiece" anime. It's difficult for spin-off adaptions to surpass their originals, but it's possible as well. Say, the FMA manga or anime.

Thats.... acually pretty arrogant to say. Now you have just basicly accused anyone who gave Death Note a rating above Very Good as "not having cultured taste", which is such a subjective ideal anyways. Not very nice if you ask me. :/

I haven't actually seen Death Note, so I cant tell you why people like it so much. Iv heard nothing but good about it though.
Personaly, I only have a VERY FEW titles rated as "Masterpeice". If I REALLY REALLY LOVED it, I usually give it an "Excellent" and ONLY if I think it was groundbreakingly DIFFERENT then most in the genre, do I give it a "Masterpeice" rating.

Death Note is rated as a masterpiece because it IS a masterpiece.

Silly people.

I agree with this statement. I only have 2 anime rated as a "Masterpiece", and both of them did something impressively original and remarkably entertaining that I still haven't seen emulated as of yet. All my other top favorites still don't have anything higher than an "Excellent" from me. Handing out too many "Masterpiece" ratings really cheapens the meaning of it, IMHO.

Now, I personally haven't seen much of Deathnote anime beyond episode 1, but I can see that it does have some excellent qualities that would garner a deserved fanbase. I'll bet that once the series ends it'll likely drop lower in the rankings, though I wouldn't be surprised if it'll still remain in the top 10. Usually, those who love an anime so much that they'd give out a "Masterpiece" rating will do so before an anime finishes, since they've already made up their minds on it. Those who rate more conservatively are more likely to finish watching a show before handing out their opinion.

But hey, just because someone gives a rating to a show doesn't mean they actually believe it. All the top anime on the rating scale have their share of "Worst Ever" ratings as well (some more than others >.>). While I by no means like all of the top rated anime, I can't see how any of them can be considered "Worst Ever"; a good deal of those ratings are likely jerks who refuse to accept that their favorite show is not on top, and think that by handing out bad ratings they're somehow improving the situation for all. The ratings system is by no means flawless, but it's still the best we've got for now.

I couldn't really care less. I have a systematic way of evaluating "cultured taste" at a glance, but it's a fair inference to say that almost all shows given a "MASTERPIECE" rating are by fanboys/fangirls and that most of them don't have a prolific range of watched titles. Speaking from experience here.

As far as I'm concerned, the internet fandom is ever growing, but while the influx of newbies is continuous, the "education" of those already here is very slow. I entered the internet community in 2000 on a Pokemon messageboard and roughly became who I am in about four months; I've seen people act dumb for well over a year after joining a new forum. So long as the sonorous out-weight the new folk who vote on an impulse, equilibrium has been achieved. I do my best to lend a helping hand in my own hard-fisted manner.

Just a note, though, "cultured" referred to "experience", id est, people haven't watched a lot of anime, so they'll obvously pile on the praises for their first show.

Heck, I did that for FSN last year and now I see it as a pretty bad anime overall.

Same applies to me; I believe I only have five, and my favourite anime isn't even among them. Heck, only two of them are legitimate; one of these days I do need to update that list.

Granted, the manga was a huge hit with a well developed story and everytihng. I rated it a Masterpiece. I've only seen up to episode three of the series, and I have to admit that it is doing a good job being adapted from the manga. But I'm one of those people who just have to see it to the end before I can give out a rating, because even though I know how the storyline goes, if there were any changes made to the story I might think of it differently. People have rated it Masterpiece because they think it's as great as the manga, and it's like the manga.

Why?

Anyone who's asking "Why?" are in the minority here. Just go read some reviews, or wait until someone posts in this thread explaining the good points of the series.
It seems there's always a minority of people that either needs things explained to them or are arguing against everyone else.
If you don't like it and don't feel it deserves all the attention it gets, that's just your difference in opinion with the majority of people, and no-one really cares about you. :P

Uh, no, if you're saying it's a masterpiece the burden of proof is on you - how about trying to construct an argument rather than waiting for someone else to come along and back up your statement for you? Saying "it is because it is" is a circular argument so small you're already up your own arse, metaphorically speaking.

Keep your heavy handed judgemental opinions to yourself unless you care to elaborate Malintex. Perhaps if you shared out your public lists so people like me could get an understanding of where you're coming from we'd be more inclined to listen. However, as it is, the only thing you seem to do whenever any subject like this comes up is to come and immediately pass judgement on these people as being obviously idiots because they don't share the same values and concepts you do. If you want us to take you seriously, explain what it is that makes your system so much darned better than everyone else's, and how it applies to Death Note only deserving a maximum rating of "Very good" by those of "cultured tastes".

Personally, I haven't rated Death Note yet, and I'll probably give it an excellent in the end, but I can completely see why someone would give it a masterpiece rating.

As for the very few masterpiece ratings idea, this is something that we've beaten to death here at ANN a number of times. Most people believe that it should be reserved for the cream of the crop anime, but even someone who has given out 20 or 30 masterpieces can't really be said to be overdoing it, if they've seen the 20 or 30 best shows ever made. It obviously depends entirely on where the person draws the line. There are arguably wrong places to draw the line, but any moron of a critic can point flaws in your reasoning if you try to draw the line at one specific criteria that takes people's opinions and feelings into account (and considering the nature of the rating system here, it simply would not make sense to ignore that aspect).
