i'm looking for something like the "egm (electronic gaming monthly)" of anime magazines. is play magazine the best out there to subscribe to? it doesn't have to include video games like play does.

Well, if you're looking for something like EGM, don't buy Newtype. I'm an EGM reader and I love the magazine, but I'm also a Newtype reader, I was reading Newtype expecting EGM's witty humor, but was sadly dissapointed. Anime Insider, another magazine you should avoid, it's plastered with pictures of Pokemon, DragonBall Z, and Yu-Gi-Oh.

"Anime Insider, another magazine you should avoid, it's plastered with pictures of Pokemon, DragonBall Z, Yu-Gi-Oh, and all that crap."

You could NOT be MORE WRONG on this one, pal. I happen to write for Anime Insider and if you'd ever, say, ACTUALLY OPENED an issue of the magazine you'd see that there is almost ZERO content regarding Pokemon, Yugioh or Dragonball. The magazine focuses on ALL anime. This month had a cover featuring Witch Hunter Robin and had stories on Haibane Renmei among other big titles.

So let's do a little research before we go saying stupid, baseless lies, okay?

Anime Insider's been re-inventing itself ever since it changed it's name from Anime Invasion.

2 years ago I really wasn't impressed with the magazine, it was plastered with DBZ, Pokemon and YuGiOh. They've since left that territory to Becket's Anime Collector.

AI has improved drasticly and is one of the two Anime magazines I enjoy the most, Protoculture Addicts being the other one.

Of course, they needed to hire all of ANN's staff to get so good Smile

(Zac, Rebecca and Bamboo are all writers in this month's AI).

No, no, you're quite right. There is a serious potential for conflict of interest.

However, the fact of the matter still stands that AI _has_ significantly changed its content since it first premiered. For better or worse, that's up to you to decide, but they don't plaster images of DBZ everywhere anymore, that's for certain.

And (AFAIK) they no longer grab images from bootlegs/fansubs. I distinctly recall them (or some other magazine's premiere issue from that time) including questionable subs on "new" anime series screencaps. :p

Not realisticly, in my opinion, no.

It's very common in the journalism industry for freelance writers to write for more than 1 publication.

It's also common for writers to be staff at more than one publication, or staff at 1, and freelance at others.

Zac, and Rebecca will never be put into a position to review AI should ANN decide to review Anime publications. I'd also be less than inclined to permit them to review other pubs, since conflict of interest would dictate that they might give the competition a bad review.

That being said, the possibility is always there, but it's more something that could shaft either AI or ANN should one of those writers decide to tell the other publication something they shouldn't. It's not something that would affect the readers.

Not somethign I expect to happen though.

It's not completely baseless, otherwise I wouldn't say it. I've picked up two issues and(I know it's not very much to judge an entire magazine on, but..) both had pictures of one of the animes I mentioned eariler. I'll try and keep an open mind and look at another issue or two. Oh, and Zac, I think you're getting a liitle to used to being right (not that you're right about this since it's a matter of opinion), because you're being a little rude about it.

i did check out newtype and it's pretty good, the subscription rate is very expensive though. 1 year is $89.95.

I'm always rude, especially when people say things that aren't true about magazines I happen to work for and respect. If you don't like it, don't say stupid things.

Anime Insider is pretty cool my friend subscribes so he lets me borrow the issues! Its pretty funny...meanwhile Newtype USA is pretty cool they just need to stop all of the deep stuff and add some humor! O well thats what i think!
