Do anime companies usually stop producing singles DVD's after the box sets come out? I ask because I had the hardest time finding the last 3 DVD's of DNAngel. ADV had them on their website but I didn't want to pay $29.99 plus $9 shipping, but all the web sites I went to only had the box set and Borders could only order the box set or DVD 7. I finally was able to get the last 3 off of Rightstuf but no where else could get them. Also at Borders they were able to order Boys Be DVD2 but they had trouble ordering it and finding it in their system and the wierd thing is there is no Boys Be box set. The same goes for other anime titles, once the box set comes out I only see that on the shelves and singles don't re appear often. Also in the new Rightstuf catalog they no longer have singles of DVD's that have box sets. I understand they want to get the box sets out there because they take up less space and usually save you more money. The problem with that is for people like me who sometimes do not buy the new DVD when it comes out it becomes more of a problem to complete our collection. So is there a time limit that companies wait when a box set comes out before they stop making singles?

It seems that companies don't exactly stop making single DVDs altogether after a box-set release, but most do seem to drastically limit the amount of them they make, especially for older titles. This is especially annoying with ADV, as they seem to strip extras from almost all of their box-set DVDs. However, I can see the logic in their doing so, as it seems to be much cheaper in general to mass-produce box-sets that more people buy anyway, especially after the series has been out long enough that the majority of the singles buyers would have already bought their share. This is a slight annoyance to me, as I'm at somewhat of a disadvantage after having come into fandom rather late, but it still makes sense.

When the cheap collections come out the singles usually go OOP or become really scarce. Except for ADV, most companies put out the exact same discs in their economy collections so there aren't many people who would want to pay more to buy singles. If there's only a box set out (not an economy collection/thinkpack/brick), I've never had a problem tracking down the actual singles. I recently had to replace one of my Fafner discs and found the singles everywhere despite there being a "complete collection" available.

There's not a "time limit", it just depends on the company and how the DVDs sell.

A good source for singles, I've found, is Overstock.com. You have to sift through hentai and new regular anime titles and they changed the way their search engine works so you can't search only in the anime section, but sometimes you can find older singles and older artboxes.
