*Some early/middle episode spoilers
spoiler[ok, I'm on the second part of the anime, where they are discussing the past about Taiki. I'm horribly confused, almost all the time, as to what's going because there are a lot of japanese words flying around. It's hard to keep up with all the descriptions of people, titles, animals etc. My main question as of right now though is, Taiki's I think "nyokai", the woman/tiger/lizard...what is she exactly? A shirei is a youma that's been tamed by the kirin, but the nyokai was born serving Taiki's egg. Are all the different female for the three kirin I've seen this?(Keiki/Kourin's bird-like female companions) Or is this something different and those were just youma as well?] |

I believe the chimera lady (I'm not sure about the term - -") is actually a youma -- if memory serves, they mentioned it once somewhere in the 45-episode run
As for Keiki and the Dragon Ball boy (my nickname for the En Taiho Sorry I couldn't be much help, but my memory of the series is pretty hazy, so don't take anything in that spoiler bracket as fact. Man, I really wish they'd come back and finish the originally planned episodes just so I can spoiler[finish Taiki's story] without having to wait for Tokyopop to release all the novels. |

spoiler[Yes, you've got what the nyokai and shirei are. The nyokai serve and protect the kirin their whole lives. And yes, the two others are the same thing. It's just that they're older (in Enki Rokuta and Yokuhi's case much older - they're slightly over 500 remember). The difference is that in Taiki and Sanshi's case you're seeing the situation from it's conception. ] See? You're not as confused as you thought! |

I believe Keiki and Kourin simply have/had more standard looking nyokai. When Sanshi was born the old lady even says "torso of a human, body of a leopard, and tail of a fish, what a peculiar combination." (I think there was part of a fish somewhere in there too).
And though it is a youma that serves the Kirin, I don't think that nyokai qualify as shirei. spoiler[Before Taiki gets his first shirei he make multiple comments about the nyosen being concerned about him not having any shirei to defend himself. ]To be a shirei it has to be a tamed youma that enters the pact to eat the kirin's flesh when it dies. |

Sanshi is the yokai who is supposed to look after Taiki when he is born. After a Kirin grows up and chooses a ruler, the yokai who looked after him/her becomes his/her shirei. Sanshi serves Taiki like one of his Shireis. If you read the book "The Shore in Twilight The Sky in Daybreak" (either in Chinese or Japanese) it describes how Taiki was rescued and in the book, Sanshi is referred to as a Shirei. This book is what follows after the TV series ends, it is not animated.
Hmmm.....I don't know how I should proceed with my website for the 12 Kingdoms, I thought of closing it but I might want to continue work on it. Give me some comments and suggestions (if possible). http://12kingdoms.faith-it.net |
