When I use the ANN search engine it never finds any thing. For example, when I search for bleach(see link below)

animenewsnetwork.com/search?q=bleach&type=all

nothing ever shows up. BUT, when I change it to search just in the encyclopedia(see link below)

animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/search.php?searchbox=bleach

I get results, it seems there is an issue when a user searches the ANN website the search engine searches everything(ALL) by default.

I also don't think this is a browser issue because I have been using firefox 2.0.0.1

And I'm also wondering if anyone else is having this issue and if this issue can be resolved.

Yep, this happens when you type something in the search box in the upper corner and just hit enter (or press the "search" button). However if you choose "encyclopedia" (or whatever you want to search with) from the drop down menu you'll get the right results straight away.

It's not a browser issue, it happens both on Firefox and IE, and on Windows and Mac.

I want, when i search....

not to get this:

animenewsnetwork.com/search?q=bleach&type=all

,but to get this:

animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/search.php?searchbox=bleach

I don't want to put the anime name on the search bar then i have to click on the search so i can scroll to encyclopedia, i want it to be quick, so i just want to press enter after i put the name in the search bar and get this

animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/search.php?searchbox=bleach

not this
animenewsnetwork.com/search?q=bleach&type=all

I hope that's clear enough

Very Happy

Sorry, the default search is going to remain the site search. It really makes no sense for the default search to be of a subsection....

If you want to search a specific portion of the site (ie: the Encyclopedia), you'll have to select that section in the pull-down.

Hmm, actually...perhaps if the search is instigated from an encyclopedia page, it should default to the encyclopedia. What do you think Dan ?

No. Changing the behavior of the search box depending on where you are is a surefire way to confusion. Besides, when searching for an anime name with the default search, it usually pops up as the first result.

It's so much easier to use the encyclopedia search before; however, if nothing can be done, well.... i guess i'll just hope and pray that someday the old search will comeback where you can make the encyclopedia search the default search Confused Crying or Very sad

Is there a way that this can be made a user specific preference for when they log in?

I gave up on using site-specific search engines a very long time ago. Either they can't find what I want, or they take forever, or a combination of the two. These days I use Google or Yahoo with the "site:" tag and then start mining away. You'd be surprised how powerful a properly written search engine is after using all the various half-assed ones that most websites provide. Seriously, there are thousand-page tombs on how to get the very most of out of search engines. The only time this external search process doesn't work is when the database or front end is unusually cryptic or otherwise protected from anonymous indexing.

Actually, the generic search on ANN uses the Google engine.

Another problem with searching—often when I try to use the search engine to find something in the Encyclopedia, I receive no results for the first attempt (see screenshot).

The second (and subsequent) attempt(s) work normally.
