when did it become a priority that every mecha show must f*ck with your head? i just finished "Rahxephon" and this cartoon is just flat out confusing as hell. don't get me wrong i like a show that can make me think, but DAMN!
at what point did watching a giant robot become a freaking humanity lesson? i never heard Voltron quoting Shakesphere, and i had never heard the Transformers discussing the "Duality Of Man", it's just getting to be too much. you shouldn't have to be a philosophy major to watch a robot stomping around a city.
aren't there any Mecha shows that are just fun to watch? only ones i can think of are Full Metal Panic, Dual, and (to an extent) Big O

I agree with you. drama and humanity lessons does not belong in mecha or action anime. Psychological is the worst. X_x
Romance and comedy is good in mecha.. like in Full metal panic.
I dont like drama anime at all. =[
go watch gundam seed dude.

You can blame Eva for that one.

There are alot of mech shows with less of the psychological stuff. FMP, Martian Successor Nadesico, are what come to mind. If you don't like a mecha show that makes you think, then don't watch it, but alot of people like a good action show that makes them think as well, just look at the popularity of EVA.

Yup. It confused me too a la Eva. But I did enjoy watching it and it wasn't as angsty as Eva was. Although, the ending I did NOT get. Even after watching it a second time. But I still love them! IMO, it's best to watch these shows when you're drunk!

Come on, Blue Blood?
It has much of an Eva ripoff feel. It isn't but, it borrows on Eva.

Daiguard is an amazing Mecha show, extremely funny with no psycho-babble to mess with your head. Highly recomend it!

i'll have to check it out. it's not the drama that bugs me, it's when it starts getting way over the top.

Blame "Kill 'em All" Tomino for it, v1cious. In 1979 when Mobile Suit Gundam proved that mecha anime could be more than a half-hour toy commercial, writers/directors/artists made the big robot show their forum for presenting a microcosm of life.
Mecha shows are more accessible to people. People find philosophy, morality, and mortality easier to swallow when the situation of the characters is further away from them. Hence, you can get a lot of people to start theorizing about the meaning of life after watching Evangelion, but you can't get them to sit through Millenium Actress.
Besides, there's still plenty of mecha anime that's just classic big robot fun. You just have to look a bit harder for it.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems to be the other way around in terms of psychological impact.
Personally, I think it's hilarious when my friends rent Eva for example, thinking, "This is gonna be great! Giant robots blowing up everything with huge death ray zappers! Yay!" Only to discover, "Owwww! Why do I have to use my brain?"
I think Naota's father (FLCL) summed it up pretty good in his "robot monologue."

That's because Optimus Prime was Jewish.
*ducks the flying items*
Anyway, howabout the OAV and TV series of Patlabor? Doubtful you wanna watch the movies, as they go into geopolitical themes and philosophical quandries
