Ok,this is quite an unusial question for me to ask and I have yet to see a Topic about this yet and this has been on my mind as of recently,so as of lately, I've been doing alot of examination comparing character deisigns and Illustration artwork from both Anime and Manga adaption as I've been reading the Elemental Gelade manga and watching the Anime version, and as most of you already notice, there are times that the Anime version have completely different character art compared to the manga dued to a different artist.

and so to get on with my question for this Topic, what do you guys mostly perfer? the character designs in the Anime adaption or the Original Character artwork from the manga?

for me,although I like both animation character art for the Anime as well as liking the original Illustration art from the manga, but there are also times I will like the manga art better than the anime artwork other vice-versa. for one common example,I perfer the Anime adaption of Flame of Recca's character designs by Atsushi Wakabayashi and Mari Kitayama (the same one who did the character designs for the anime version of Tokyo Mew Mew, than I do of Nobuyuki Anzai's original Illustration of the manga and heres a good reason why.

because during times when I'm reading the Flame of Recca manga,I sometimes get confused Identifying some of the characters trying to tell who they are, because at times, the artwork in the manga can get sloppy in some panels, especially Recca Hanabishi, because in some panels, you can barely Identify him. while in the Anime adaption,it's much easier to identify most of the characters. Wink

but thats just my opinions, what about you guys.

I think it is pretty much case-by-case, and (for me at least) probably largely influenced by which I see first. For example, I prefer the clean lines of the Cardcaptor Sakura anime to the manga, but it was the anime I saw first. I prefer the Negima manga designs (I don't think anyone was happy about the colour changes in the anime mind), but again I read the manga first.
There are cases when improvements have clearly been made - while they have a habit of going off-model, I prefer the Higurashi anime designs to those I've seen from the games. On the other hand, the Stellvia manga (which was based on the anime series) has appaling artwork, and I didn't like the designs of the Kingdom Hearts manga either. Again in all these cases however, the version I prefer is the first I saw.

I also think that for me it is case-by-case. Whichever looks better to me, I will like better. Although I am willing to cut the anime versions more slack than the manga versions, because anime is composed of far more frames and pictures and all animes have really terrible drawings from time to time, or even most of the time. I try to compare the manga's best-drawn or better-drawn pictures, to the best-drawn or better-drawn pictures/episodes in the anime, to be fair. I also try not to let what I've seen first influence me, but it might influence me a tiny, tiny bit.

As one personal example: I hate the Negima! anime drawings and couldn't stand to watch the show even when it was free on TV. The manga drawings are far superior. But, I think the Negima?! re-done anime series by SHAFT has better drawings than the manga. Although I haven't seen the actual show yet, I am just going by the pictures for it that I have seen. It may just be me but I preferred Ken Akamatsu's older style that he used throughout most of the Love Hina manga (except for the very earliest volumes, in which his style was not quite perfected yet) compared to what he does now in Negima. I'm also annoyed by the cheap 3D backgrounds he uses throughout the Negima manga. They don't look good to me. They are too busy and have too much detail and bother my eyes, plus at the same time they don't look very interesting because of the way they are generated.

Sometimes, even though both the anime and manga have very different-looking drawings, I still like both. One example is with Shakugan no Shana. I like the anime style even though it is totally different from the original Noizi Ito drawing style. The Haruhi Suzumiya anime style is very close to the original Noizi Ito style of Haruhi, but in lower quality. If you ask me to compare which style I like better, Shana which is very unfaithful to the original, or the Haruhi anime style, which is faithful but subject to the quality limitations of anime (consistency can never match that of a manga, game, or book)...to be honest I like Shana's style better. But I like Noizi Ito's true style about the same as the Shana anime's totally different style. I don't think it is necessarily a bad thing for animes to not have the same style as the original.

Yeah, that's often the same way I feel. It's not always the case--I saw the D.N.Angel anime first, but I prefer the manga's character designs, and I read the Azumanga Daioh manga first but prefer the anime's designs--but often it just comes down to whatever I'm used to. Normally I don't care a huge amount, though.

Yeah, it definitely is case by case. However, the majority of the time I prefer the look of the manga to the anime, even in cases where I see the anime first. The only big exception I can think to this is Ouran Host Club, where I do prefer the anime, especially for the twins.

I usually prefer anime art just because it looks more uniform and clean, but it depends on the anime and its manga counterpart. With some series I feel a lot of the 'personality' is lost in the translation from manga to anime. An example is xxxHoLiC, which, although stunning in manga form, looked really strange as an anime (Yuuko in particular, due to her odd proportions and tendency to stretch out on any available surface). Another anime feature which I thought really lost something was Appleseed; the CGI animation was pretty cool (although the motions of the human characters looked a bit awkward), but the manga just had so much more character. The people looked less polished and more realistic, and even Briareos was snugglier. The movie version of Hitomi was just scary. I also didn't like how Deunan looked to be about 16 years old. Isn't she supposed to be 25?

Then there are series where I think the anime art is actually an improvement, like Fullmetal Alchemist. While I like the manga art well enough (I think Arakawa Hiromu has a real talent for expressing motion), I prefer the smoother look of the anime, especially with certain characters like Envy, Winry, and Roy. They all just looked really...off in the manga.

This especially holds true if the mangaka has an art style that is incredibly difficult to adapt into animation. Really, some shoujo mangaka with complicated art styles (like Ai Yazawa, or latter-day CLAMP, or.. some of Yuu Watase's stuff) have problems in getting the complicated wispy stuff turned into animation without losing some of the grandeur of the manga art. Of course, not to mention those with nigh-unadaptable art, like Hiroaki Samura, whose art is.. complicated to say the least. Complicated, but pretty.

That said, if the manga art isn't really awesome, then the anime art would tend to end up nicer-looking in comparison. But then, typical shounen fare have very animation-friendly art, which leads us to their big problem: when the anime ends up with lots of off-model moments.

Artbook illustrations, though, are another issue altogether, pretty much being bound pieces of awesome. Very Happy
