I went to AX this last June. I went the first day early in the morning so I wouldn't have to wait forever to get in. My mom's reaction to my going to AX was just I hope you have fun kind of thing, it was my going and my paying to get in, I was going to have fun and she saw it fit that I go and have fun. She even told me that she met a cosplayer who was going in a fabric shop, and tipped me off so that I would go in the morning to avoid the lines.
My grandma does not like my hobby at all. When she heard I was going, she started ranting with things such as "Why waste your time and money?! This is degrading to you!" kind of stuff. She'll probably never understand. Whenever I talk about AX with my friends, we're trying to make plans to room together for next year, which will save us money and I can go all four days as well. |

I've only ever been to one convention, & it was more of a sci-fi thang, with anime tacked on as a 'special event'. Aside from being scarred for life by the Star Trek cosplayers, the event was kinda fun, & meeting anime fans from all walks of life (e.g., doctors, IT consultants, accountants, lawyers, students, bikers, etc) was the highlight of the event for me.
As to my folks, I didn't tell them I was going, as their reaction would have been the same as your grandma's ('why waste your time & money' sorta thing). My friends just took the mickey outta me, saying that I was gonna be married off to a Klingon if I wasn't careful, so take a cricket bat for self defense.  My boyfriend at the time was rather more understanding; he just told me to be careful & have some fun, & he picked me up to & from the event every day that I went.

all of my friends are AT the convention anyway lol.
but my mom doenst think anything wrong. just something me and my gang like. she doesnt understand anything about it but know i like anime and videogames and she even tried to learn how to play. she's just glad to have me and friends going to an anime con rather than going to a gogo and doing drugs and having sex like "normal" young adults edit: you might get more replies in the anime forums just make it OT |

I decided I wanted to go to Anime Festival Orlando and I was on the website looking at the guests. When I told my husband Chris Sabat was going to be there he was so excited we decided to go.

Hey about the AX thing well its your hobby and your money so it shouldnt matter to them. unless they are expecting you to buy them sumthing with your money. lol I was trying to get some friends to help rent rooms and stuff but not many people want to. Then again my friends arent hardcore anime fans. the love anime they just arent motivated. i go for the anime but mostly to meet new people. ^-^

Most of my friends went to ACen before I did, and they're all about going to cons, even the ones who don't watch much anime....it's more for the social aspect of it, and a chance to drink copious amounts of alcohol in the presence of scantily clad cosplayers. The reaction that's usually more interesting is the one I get from coworkers when they ask me where I'm going on vacation and I tell them "I'm going to a nerd convention."  When I explain what a convention is and what happens there, there's never any judging or anything, just kind of a confused wonderment that such things exist...and I suppose that a guy my age would go to such things...heh.
My parents couldn't care less, as long as I get home safe. I was going to Wizard World Chicago (same convention center, same hotel) 5 years before I ever went to an anime con. |

My mom came with me to my first. She was mostly happy that I was having fun
 . She thought it was interesting, and she thought some of the cosplay costumes were very well made. She even saw an anime episode she liked! (Otogi-Jushi Akazukin Episode 1) She also thought it was cool for me to be in a place where people enjoy what I like and actually know what I'm talking about. Sure, watching anime by yourself or a few friends is fun- but being in a community with others sharing a common interest totally boosts up the fun factor in a hobby.

I go to the Fanime Con in San Jose every year, my parents are willing to pay for a room for me and my friends. They tour the area while we attend the con, makes it pretty easy and fun because the hotel's connected to the main building, so we have safe and fast transit, just walk out into the main lobby.

only my parents and my sister really know. my dad has gone to the two cons I've been to so far, since he insisted, and he doesnt like it. which is why im going to the next couple cons im going to with a friend. dammit i want to be ALONE!!!
my sister hates the stuff with a passion, cause of the girls in my old high school. cosplay something acceptable in public, people. PLEASE, itd give us a better rep. somewhat anyway |

Although my dad hates anime, he and my mom give me money to go, in fact they seem almost happy that i'm leaving them, even if it is to drown myself into my Otakuness.

My first one, AnimeNEXT '06, I decided to take one of my friends who isn't into anime, and my little brother, who like FMA and DBZ only, but is a huge gamer. My friend thought it was odd that strangers kept talking to each other and taking pictures of one another, but she liked looking at the cosplayers and Artist's Alley, and she even bought an Asian-style makeup bag in the Dealer's Room. She was defiantely less than enthused about the FMA panel and the Masquerade, though. My little brother had a lot of fun in the video game game room, and he bought a lot of merchendise in the dealer's room. He was really excited when he saw that a dealer had an SNES out for people to play, so he played Super Mario for 10-15 minutes. I also met up with some of my equally anime obsessed friends there, and we had a lot of fun together. The line for the masquerade was really long, so we hung out and talked about the con, anime, etc.
My next con was MangaNEXT. I brought my friend who is also really into anime. He wasn't very into all the BL/yaoi I was looking at, but he had fun

HOLY CRAP!
 both NEXT's last year were my firsts too. and yea, that FMA panel was a nightmare, and evil fangirl nightmare...*shiver*. it sounded like the black riders from LOTR. the classic deafening fangirl shriek.
but it was great. im sad i didn't do more, and i shouldve taken more pictures. i also assume you saw the duck duck goose game in manga next on friday. im not making this up. |

I was part of the duck duck goose game actually, but on Saturday. I was Ed from Cowboy Bebop at AnimeNEXT and Ritsuko from Evangelion at MangaNEXT, by hte way. And I have to admit I helped add to the "fangirlishness" of the FMA panel, by asking Vic Mignogna to say his (in)famous "Colonel Mustang is dead sexy in a miniskirt!" line. I then proceeded to jump up and down screaming "OMG! Thank you!" at the tops of my lungs after he said it. But if I can't be silly at an anime con, then where can I be silly in public?
 But the girl who asked Vic to marry her as a joke was very silly as well, and Vic's reply was very funny, as well as Laura Bailey saying "Yes!" by accident.

I've only been to one convention - Ohayocon in early 2006.
Honestly, I didn't think it'd be much fun, but my dad pushed me into it, saying that I don't go out enough (which is true). I think both of my parents think of anime as just another hobby - they're glad I still enjoy it after several years, since I've grown bored with quite a few of my past hobbies, such as baseball and writing (I still write, but not nearly as much as I used to). The con was actually more fun than I'd imagined it would be, although my friend and I only went for one day and only for about 5 hours. I didn't even know what a panel was, but we wondered into one with a few voices from Inuyasha, and they were pretty funny. I left one of my bags there, though, and it was stolen.  That was my favorite part, though; all of the shopping and merchandise. If I was rich, I easily could have spent over $1000.
I also liked the anime screenings (free anime!), though the fangirls at Gravitation REALLY freaked me out, screaming and screeching every two-and-a-half minutes... |
