Buying guides are over-rated you should buy what you want, not what some magazine tells you, you want.

Also, I think Shelf Life does a good job of assessing what's "hot" and "what's not."

A buying guide can help expose people to anime they haven't yet heard of and don't know they want. As long as whoever does it makes it clear when there is personaly bias involved it tends to be a fine idea. Yes, it can get people to buy stuff they don't want, but it can also expose them to great anime they've never even heard of.
