I'm very much pleased that AnimEigo's going to be selling the You're Under Arrest TV series in several sets of 12 episodes each, which is a decent-sized chunk per set but still affordable to a much wider number of fans than the Macross and Kimagure Orange Road boxsets were. But I'm just a little concerned with (well I don't know if it's a rumour or what, because if it isn't I missed the headline) this piece of information I found on the Anime Nation message board:
Now, each OVA episode was edited by about 3 minutes to accomodate commercials, and the opening and ending credits were replaced with the ones used for the rest of the TV series. Why can't AnimEigo just have the 4 OVA episodes presented intact on DVD and include a little explanation in the liner notes for those people unaware that the first four episodes of the TV series were just the OVAs edited for time? Or is the TV cut version the only version they have permission to put on DVD and they'd have to renegotiate to get the DVD rights for the original versions of the OVAs? If it came down to it, I'd buy them both, because I love the original OVA opening song just that much. Until I hear otherwise, I'm glad I never got rid of my hybrid LDs. |

I was just wondering if anyone could answer wether or not the t.v. series will be edited? I've got a few episodes from season 2 on tape and I can think of a few things that most companies would cut before releasing it over here.

Although, as far as I know, no one's licensed the most recent TV series yet, I think you can be pretty certain, no matter who gets it, they will be unedited as aired on Japanese TV. Even if they did an edit for American TV after (in the unlikely event) Cartoon Network or whomever picked it up, I doubt it would affect the DVDs. My concern is only that all we'll get of the OVA episodes on DVD will be the versions edited for Japanese TV strictly for time reasons and with the TV openings and closings (there's nothing in the OVAs that would have to be taken out for American TV except maybe for the occasional "damn" or the sh-word, and I'm not even sure those are there; the rest of the TV series, okay, you have Aoi, but this isn't a show we'd, or, rather, you'd (since the Canadian government won't let us watch CN) be likely to see on Toonami anyhow, so there's no need to worry. You only really got the heavy T&A on the short "specials" aired on that variety show, and even that wasn't really any worse than Baywatch, or, my favourite, Son of the Beach). |

Wait, I'm reading reports from AX that AnimEigo showed the first You're Under Arrest disk, and the openings and closings were the original OVA opening ("Courage at 100mph") and closing ("With All the Passion I Have"). Now, I thought Mr. Woodhead wasn't interested in licensing the OVA versions of episodes 1 through 4 for DVD, since they'd have to negotiate with different companies than the TV series and it would cost them upwards of $15 000, for something that only a "handful" of fans would care about; only a few seconds from each episode was cut for TV (according to Mr. Woodhead) and the opening and closing was changed to conform with the rest of the TV series.
Hmm... did something happen to him recently that made him realize that some of us are dead serious about keeping the openings and closings intact? Visited by three ghosts in the night, maybe (ones that look suspiciously like Kyosuke, Madoka and Hikaru)? |

Have you kept up on the news about the Kimagure Orange Road box set? That whole mess will probably leave him feeling uneasy about altering openings and closings for quite some time. |

Yeah, that's what I was alluding to, with the three ghosts and all. |

Why would they want change the opening/closing to the OVA? It's like it going to make a big diff. Then again, KOR. |

It's quite simple: one company owns the rights to the OVAs and an entirely different one owns the TV series (I don't know which company AnimEigo deals with for either version). They negotiated with one company for the DVD rights for the TV versions of episodes 1 through 4, but if they wanted to include the OVA opening and closing on DVD (even though they already have the rights to do it on VHS and LD, unless they've lapsed) they'd have to negotiate with the other comapny, which, if what was shown at AX is indicative of what will be on the final disk and is not just a prototype, is what they must have done in the weeks since Mr. Woodhead made the comments on the AnimEigo Talk mailing list that the OVA redits sequences would not be included.. |

Allright, an official response from Robert Woodhead on the AnimEigo Talk mailing list, and it's looking really good for those of us who want the original opening and closing sequences for You're Under Arrest episodes 1 through 4. (Since the DVD mailing list is mostly off-topic discussions, if you have something you really want him to hear, post it on the "Talk" list.) Even if it doesn't work out, at least I know they tried their best.
