I have a collection of anime growing at a snails pace right now, I like a lot of what I see but price of anime really holds me back from checking out other stuff, and my local video stores are no help. So do think anime is starting to get enough of a following to start lowering prices, if not when do you think we might see that happen.

In short? Don't hold your breath.
Even should sales go up, I don't think you'll see the prices on new anime go down. What is happening, though, is a number of the larger distributors are starting to release their older titles in a collected, more economical format, or re-releasing them with a lower pricetag. Anime is an expensive hobby.... one best afforded once you get a decent job. I know my collection grew slowly until I got out of the University and got myself employed.... |

Sorry... I've been an anime fan long enough to remember when the subtitled VHS tapes cost $60-70 Canadian and were pretty much available only at comic book stores. Now, I can get the bulk of anime titles (single disks) for just below $30 Canadian at pretty much anywhere that sells DVDs, and even the Pioneer/Geneon and Bandai stuff is a bit cheaper than it was in the bad old days of subtitled VHS, and, you usually get more episodes and you get both subtitled and dubbed and most disks have at least a smattering of special features and, of course, the picture and audio quality is much better.
From my perspective, the prices have already come down. |

Prices have fallen alot thu. MSRP has stayed the same for the most part but only a handfull of places charge it (such as the place I avoid SUNCOAST charges FULL MSRP on practilly everything in the store) Were as RightStuf and Bestbuy are alot cheaper. Plus with the release's of older series in bricks and boxsets its getting alot easyer to save money while buying anime. Now if only manga would get cheaper but I see that trend starting with VIz's issuing some manga for 8 dollers. unlike dvds thu Shipping really eats the diffrence in price on manga.
Theres always buying Used dvds. I tend to avoid Ebay as it tends to be about 94% bootlegs as far as anime goes but thats a personal choice if your confident in your ability to spot bootlegs ebay can be a good place to get stuff from. [/b] |

It really depends on what you want, and where to look. Typically, the newer just recently released anime will be pretty expensive. However, there are some older series that you can get for decent prices. That is, if you shop on-line, of course. For example, you can now buy the Blue Seed: Perfect Collection (legit) for as low as $35 at Deep Discount DVD. I've also noticed that the Evangelion Perfect Collection dropped drastically in price, because I could've swore it was somewhere around $200, and now I seen it for as low as $102 at Deep Discount DVD, which mean that prices are somewhat going down. So my advice would be: Go for the older titles. You'd be surprised at how cheap you can find them for. Also, don't forget to do your homework. Browse around, compare prices, shop from stores that are safe, secure, and reliable. Information is the best tool to have for whatever situation you're in. Peace out!

Yes, anime is not for the weak of wallet. When I was in High School I worked 30hr/wk to support my habit (...neeedddd.....a-a-a-a-annni-mmemee..)
Since then, I've been in and out of work/Uni. While in Uni I can't afford to eat let alone watch anime. Just watch for sales, pre-order something you know you like (its cheaper to pre-order), heck even the evil suncoast knocks $5 off of just released titles. |
