Hi,
I heard the OAV called Animatrix is really good. I checked the its page in the encyclopedia and it had really high user-ratings. I want to rent it from our video store, but I haven't seen any of the Matrix movies. Which movies do you need to see to understand it?
Thanks

Mainly the first and second movies. In all actuallity the Animatrix helps you understand what happened leading up to the second movie and where all of the torment comes from.

Well in all honesty to understand the Animatrix you don't need to have seen any of the movies, because all of the stories in the Animatrix are stand alones (sure some have ties to the movie like Final Flight of The Osiris). I didn't know about the Animatrix being anything spectacular though, I really like a few of them (ie Detective's Story, The Second Renaissance Parts 1&2).

Animatrix is kind of "Matrix 1.5", so I think it's MUCH better if you've seen at least the first movie.
Where's the fun in watching those 9 stories without having any idea of what's going on? Well, you should at least know the plot.

You need to have at least seen the first film. As Jagan said, the Animatrix is pretty much "Matrix 1.5," as some shorts (Final Flight of the Osiris, Kid's Story) lead directly into the second film, and others (Second Renaissance) show how the Matrix itself came to be. Most of the shorts are stand-alone, but knowing what The Matrix is about lends a lot to enjoying the Animatrix overall.

I'd have to whole heartedly agree with what Jagan and Nagisa have said. You want to see the original Matrix movie first.

In fact, the Animatrix was released shortly before the Matrix and includes some prequel items, hense the 1.5

The Animatrix is pretty good, but skip Matriculated. You're not going to miss anything.

Actually, only four of the shorts were released online before Reloaded came out. The actual Animatrix dvd, with all seven shorts, didn't come out until June, a month after Reloaded hit theaters.

All in true everybody is right watch the first movie at least then watch the animatrix, watch the second rienossance parts one and two if you don't understand why this is happening, then watch Final Flight of the Osiris after you watch the first movie of course. Then you will be up to date and ready for more. Take it from us we know what we r talking about. If u buy the Special Edition Widescreen version it comes with the soundtrack from the anime listen to it you'll like some of the tunes.

The only Animatrix episodes you need to watch are Final Flight of the Osiris, Detective & Kid's Stories, and The Second Rennasaince. All the other shorts seem like filler except for Beyond, which was pretty good.
