EDIT: Update for current needs.

This is kind of an adjunct to the Best Duo Tournament, but you don't need to be following that to help me out here. (But if you're an anime fan with a broad knowledge of anime and are not participating, why aren't you?)

I am making a guide of the duos facing off in the tournament, but there are a few I'm not familiar enough with to make a compelling argument on their behalf. The last couple of weeks people have helped me out with the Group C and Group D duos; now I am making a guide for the survivors of Group A going into the second round. (I started making the Guides with Group B.)

In looking at the Round 1 results, I have discovered two winning duos I'm not much familiar with that seem to have no compelling arguments on their behalf; they are listed below.

Mayama & Ayu from Honey and Clover
Lelouch & CC from Code Geass.

In both cases these duos won close matches (16-14 for the former, 18-12 for the latter) with high percentages of their votes being either coin flip victories or in opposition to their opponent rather than for them. Neither of them had anything that approached a passionate supporting argument that I could find.

If you can make a compelling (and mostly spoiler-free) supporting argument in 2-5 sentences for why either of these pairs make a strong duo, please post them here. An example of the kind of thing I'm looking for, taken from an earlier guide:

Quote:
Mireille Bouquet & Kirika Yuumura from Noir
Relationship: Partners in assassination.
Support: In every sense that matters, Mireille and Kirika are Noir. They form a deadly team but also have intertwined destinies and a devastating common past. The entire series is about them.

I haven't seen Cardcaptor Sakura and Pretear in too long a time for me to remember specifics of pairings, so I won't be of any help help with those two. However I am currently re-reading the Love Hina manga so I can help with Naru and Keitaro. You did mean Keitaro, right?

Keitaro & Naru from Love Hina
Relationship: Romantic.
Support: Keitaro and Naru both have their separate personal and romantic purposes for trying to get into Tokyo University however their mutual feelings change the more they spend time with each other. Despite Keitaro's childhood promise to meet a girl at the university and his strong will to keep this promise, his affections very noticeably turn to Naru, and whether or not she is the girl from the promise becomes more and more unimportant to him. From Naru's point of view Keitaro is a perverted freak and an incredible idiot who does not stand a chance to get into the university. However despite that, and her own original purpose to follow her highschool crush to the uni, her own feeling begin to change as well, although she won't admit it, even to herself, at first.

I hope it is useful and isn't too long. You can probably shorten it if it is.

Meh, I kind of lost enthusiasm for all the tournament stuff. At one point I actually wanted to start one myself; but a tiny bit during the crazy tournament, a whole lot with the evil tournament, and right at the nominations thread for the current tournament I realized I would prefer to just stay out of it. I have read a bit of the voting though.

Emeraude and Zagato Magic Knight Rayeart: The relationship between the two is somewhat disturbing. He was her high priest, but during the course of the anime, he traps her inside a castle like a dragon does to a princess, and she periodically begs him--in tears--to be set free. spoiler[Actually, they are tragic lovers, and he does so in order to free her from the responsibilities of being the pillar of Cefiro.]

Yukito and Touya Card Captor Sakura: It isn't immediately obvious, but they are homosexual lovers as well as classmates. There is as a particular moment at the end of the TV series that makes the couple memorable, which was when spoiler[Touya sacrificed his magic in order to renew Yukito's dwindling life force--running out because he was drawing on Clow Reed's powers.]

Kazuki & Juubei, GetBackers
Relationship: Childhood friends
Support: Kazuki comes from a clan that can use koto strings as weapons, while Juubei's clan has been the guardians of the members of Kazuki's clan for centuries. So at an early age Juubei was told he would be Kazuki's protector. They grew up together as best friends until spoiler[Kazuki's village was destroyed. Later on, after meeting and discovering both are still alive, Juubei is ready to sacrifice his life for Kazuki when he winds up on a different side of a battle then Kazuki.]

I didn't bother responding initially because I knew Psycho would take care of Kazuki and Juubei, and for two of the other three I knew, I couldn't really come up with good arguments for.

So I'll take a shot a justifying Simon and Nia. Unfortunately, it's a bit difficult to do without spoilers.

Simon & Nia from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Relationship: Romantic
Support: Nia came into Simon's life at a time when he was inconsolable. Despite having been abandoned as garbage, Nia was able to restore Simon's faith in himself with her indominatable cheerfulness. spoiler[Eventually after years of friendship, Nia accepts Simon's marriage proposal. Unfortunately, before the wedding, Nia awakens as the anti-Spirals messenger, leaving no apparent trace of her old personality. Simon, however, still believes that deep down the Nia he knew still exists. Simon's desire to find a rescue Nia allows him (with the Lagann) to bend space and time to reach her. ]

Lupin and Zenigata, Lupin the 3rd
Relationship: Long-time adversaries (and maybe friends?)
Support: Simply put, Lupin is the world's greatest thief, and Zenigata is the Interpol detective who has the dubious honor of being assigned to track him down. Over the many countries the chase has led him to, Zenigata's built a healthy amount of respect for Lupin's abilities, almost to the point of admiration; on the occasions where it seems as though Lupin has died, Zenigata's been the first to mourn him. Without Lupin, Zenigata's life has no meaning. For his part, Lupin and his pals have come to hold a similar admiration for the detective, greeting him with a sort of sarcastic affection whenever they meet and likewise mourning him when it seems as though he's met his end. With the supreme confidence that Zenigata will never hold him for long, Lupin is perfectly content to let him keep tagging along after them; in fact, Lupin and his pals went so far as to plot to get Zenigata reinstated on his case after the detective was reassigned. The two have been crossing paths for a good 40 years and counting; there really is no more enduring twosome in all of anime.

Excellent! With a bit of editing, I have everything covered now except for the Pretear couple. Surely there are some Pretear fans out there?

Himeno Awayuri & Hayate, Pretear
Relationship: Teacher/ Romantic interest (edit:Instead of teacher, mentor would be a better word)
Support: First off, it should be noted that they don't always get along. They meet by bumping into each other, however even though they were immediately drawn toward each other, the two personalities don't always mesh up. Later on it is revealed that Hayate is being so stern with her in order to protect her in a very serious way. At it's base the show is about this new power Himeno finds, and although she learns news tricks from all of her new friends, she always seems to do her best when either Hayate is around or they are on good terms. In a way what she wants most is his full approval, and due to the previously mentioned need for Hayate to protect her, he can't always give that approval. spoiler[He does this because of something that happened in the past, and when he fell in love with a certain someone that had the same type of power as Himeno it caused the world to go into disaster.] Or at least that's how he see's it. He is afraid this will happen again. In the end when they finally give complete trust in each other, she blooms into her full potential spoiler[and saves the day and much more.]

Thank! That will completely cover it.

Look for another around of this about the same time next week, when I'm working on the Group D duos.

Woohoo two of my favorites!

Victorian Romance Emma: Will is the heir to a Victorian merchant family's business, a family who has always rested on the fringes of high society. As such, he is expected to take a cultured wife who will bring him into that circle-- but Will is a dreamer. Emma is a softspoken maid for a kind lady, filled with warmth and inner strength. When they fall in love, it will take all the courage of two quiet, unresisting people to stand up to a cruel world where status means everything.

Yu Yu Hakusho: Yusuke Urameshi has just been told he's a spirit detective, but he knows he can't tell his pragmatic childhood friend who has always tried to curb his delinquent tendencies, Keiko. Keiko stays by Yusuke's side as he battles bigger and badder demons, and she is taken hostage several times. Each time, it becomes more and more apparent how they feel about each other until they are finally able to admit their love.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
^that one's harder to do without the ending spoiler. anyway, there is romantic fulfillment with spoiler[ a kiss ] at the end. Also at the end spoiler[ Yusuke returns to the human world to be with Keiko forever]. Not sure how to unspoiler that and work it in. Laughing

Ban Midou & Ginji Amano, GetBackers:
Two guys that not only have a troubling past and highly emotional personal experiences that dictate their views on the world. Together they not only work for profit but often times work to right past wrongs, of which many were because of whom they use to be or know. Add in the strange and even paranormal like abilities and you've got a duo that can dish it out and take it too.

Watanuki and Doumeki from xxxHolic.

Relationship: Friendly rivals.
Watanuki and Doumeki are initially rivals, and think rather badly of eachother. Watanuki especially percieves Doumeki as trying to get Himawari from him. But as Doumeki continually puts his life on the line for Watanuki, Watanuki realizes that Doumeki plays a key part in his life working for Yuuko. This is definetely a relationship that grows slowly over time.

I'd say that the initial rivalry is entirely from Watanuki's POV and that Doumeki never actually thinks badly of Watanuki (though it's hard to tell, since the anime is told from Watanuki's viewpoint). The rest sounds good though. Since the Kei season has covered the spoiler[spider grudge arc] I think it might be good to mention how they both will make major sacrifices for the sake of the other, as spoiler[first Watanuki gives up his eye to save Doumeki from a spider's grudge, and then Doumeki ends up giving up half his eye for Watanuki to use, helping Watanuki to see that other people value his well-being even if sometimes he doesn't.]

Really? I always got the impression in the manga that Doumeki was very snide and a bit of a bully. But that may just be my reading.
