eh, i'm a forum neophyte, so please be gentle...
i'm trying to find reviews of anime (be it series or full-length feature) by japanese critics. i've been reading a book about the working relationship between akira kurosawa & toshiro mifune, it's fascinating finally having the opportunity to read excerpts of the reveiws of their films that were published at the time of their initial release, and now i'm just interested in how a japanese film critic of anime sees things. so, if anyone has any suggestions on where i might be able to find something like that, i would appreciate it. (i've found a few english-language pages for newspapers in japan, but none of them seem to have a dedicated 'arts & entertainment' section) anyway, thanks for your time! -Dave |

You're not going to find them. Maybe an excerpt here or there, but nothing like you're looking for.

Welcome to the forums!
And to answer your question, I think the problem is probably the availability. Not actually knowing a whole lot of this myself, but as a guess, I'd say there'd be a lot of obstacles in finding something like what you're looking for. I don't know how they review their anime, in what format, or even if the reviews are made public like over here, but unless you actually lived over there or could at least read Japanese, chances are you won't find an anime review by an actual Japanese critic. It'd be interesting to read though. If their are a lot of them out there though, they're more than likely in Japanese, and I don't think anyone would be willing to translate the entire thing either. By the way, how do they regulate anime critquing over there? Do they review them like the U.S reviews live action movies? I wonder if there's a Japanese Ebert and Roeper for anime?

Actually, since most anime is going to be on television, you'd need to see if there is some kind of rag it would show up in.
I mean, we have things like T.V. Guide with reviews of shows on, so if they were to have reviews, it would more than likely be in some form of printed media. |

I think you answered your own question -- Look in Japanese newspapers and magazines. There aren't many Japanese writers who write primarily in English.. nor are there many English authors who write in Japanese. So, if you want to read Japanese reviews of anything... you'll need to either learn Japanese, or find someone willing to translate Japanese into English for you. |

I recall the guy who directed Wings of Honneomise that they don't review anime in Japan.

Some films get reviewed. Hayao Miyazaki gets reviewed, the big important ones do. Japanese critics do it in a far different fashion that US ones.
There is Japanese TV Guide, but my original answer was directed to English translations of Japanese reviews. Your best bet is NewType(Japan), Animage, and all the other usual suspects. |

It mostly has to do with the etiquette by which you criticize, what is and what is not allowed. If I had specifics, I'd post them, but that's what I was told by someone who worked at Newtype and was suprised how "loose" US reviews were.
