Here's a question for all of ya:
You have one (rather large) room for five hours. What would you like to have in it? (Note: Please don't say anime...not only is that obvious, but that is already taken care of)
Panels
Cosplay/masquerade contests
Video Games
anime-based game shows
<something not on the list>

Ok, this is a long shot, but you took basically every convention style "fill this big room" idea. Ok, so you have lots of people come with the anime model kit of there choice. set up tons of tables with tons of paints, sprays, knives, etc. THen, have them sit down and have a model building contest, The judges come and vote which one person used their time and meterials the best. Kits that are done but have no paint on them will obviously not win. Kits that one foot is done with soo much glue and paint, will not win... etc. Skills and time managment is important. The winner, like all anime contests, win a DVD or a model kit or something... hehe. Anyone know if this is origianal? Because I have never heard of something like this.

Maybe I should have clarified....I was asking which of that list should be done. But I didn't think of a modeling area That may be a good idea!

From that list I'd say video games. I was really dissappointed at AXNY that they didn't have a game room.

panels. and something that doesn't have much to do with anime (except maybe ideas for samurai movies) would be an Akira Kurosawa tribute.
and Cassandra do you know of any cons in Philadelphia?

Yeah...I'm working on starting a Philly con. We have a rather large room open but we only have it for about 5 hours, so I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with it

Hey, this is a pretty cool idea. Sort of Iron Chef style. If you could get sponsorship, you could have a "theme" model that you unveil and have all the contestants build the same kit. Maybe have someone come out in fluffy cape just like chairman Kaga!

From that list, I'd say that Video Games would almost be the last thing to hold in that room since you've only got it for 5 hours and you wouldn't want to make anyone mad that they didn't get a chance to try out the games they wanted to. Something that can be done in large groups like panels, workshops, or contests would probably be better since those can be better limited by time. Just my opinion.

Only 5 hours? That basically leaves in question dealers areas, corporate swag stations, and the like which follows a big con. Things might be a bit tough to coordinate if you've only got one room. There's a lot of events you could run like Anime Name that Tune, Anime Win Lose or Draw, Cosplay contests, Screening Rooms, Anime Karaoke, Anime Character Charades (one of my favorites. I managed to pull off a Gendo buy posing with 'the look') and Pocky eating contests, just to name a few. Workshops for drawing techniques and model building/painting are popular as well.
Of course, you'll have to plan these events out so too many don't conflict or interfere with each other. ie. don't run Karaoke and Name That Tune if you've got the volume cranked up and sound travels well across the room ^^;

nonono....we have 2 anime viewing rooms and a dealers room...we just happen to have this...umm...extra room and I'm trying to figure out the best thing to put in there with the time constraints I have (just for this day...I'll have the same room again the next day for a longer period of time). (And 1 or 2 more anime rooms will open up once the bigger room closes)

It's been proven at many cons that karaoke can last all night and it's relatively low maintenance after it's set up. Depending on what day of the con it is and how long you've advertised beforehand, you could run a cosplay contest and/or music video contest. Depending on how many entrys you have (and, in some cases, how often you make the host dance) both events can last anywhere between 0.5-3 hours apiece. Contests and big exhibits tend to fill up a big room the easiest, but the choice of events is pretty much up to you

Well, costume contests are always good but you need to make sure you have them planned out *very* well so people participating aren't in line forever - had this happen at Otakon last year. we were in line for at least 2 hours an only moved about 20-25 feet down the line, we ended up giving up on it so that we wouldn't miss the rest of the con activities that day.
I really like the "win, lose or draw" contest idea. It's something that almost anybody can participate in (unlike other contests) & it's a really fun game. It's also someting you don't see at other cons. You could have sign-ups & then have elimination rounds until you get maybe 3 or 4 teams to compete in a final round. If all works out, you may end up with it as something the con is known for, like Katsucon and their "Iron Artist" competition.
Cool...I like it

Ah, yes, now I see. I thought You meant "Things not on the list" as don't use this stuff. Hehe, lets see.... as a new convention panels may not work, don't really know the deal, but unless you have big companies and/or people comming, panels are not very popular. I would have to say a Cosplay would be good. It is good fun to watch, or I assume to participate in, never have. They are always very popular and I agree that Otakon definetly has a long line for it. I went in 2001, had fun, but did not go 2002 because I did not feel like waiting in line. They usually run about 3 to 4 hours, so that could work well. Now would this convention be... this year?
