Which anime franchise do you guys think will be the next long-running franchise like Gundam? Even though it isn't anywhere near as good as Gundam, my guess is Pokemon. They keep on making more games meaning more episodes. It isn't very popular in the US anymore but it still seems to popular in Japan with the newest movie doing good.

I think since Inu Yasha is about to be officially over, it takes it out of the running.

Other than Pokemon, I think perhaps Sailormoon stands a chance. It's been around since 1992, and it keeps coming back to life in some form every couple of years.

I'm thinking about how big the franchise will eventually get in Japan. Once Inu Yasha is done, it'll probably be done. Here in the US I see it continuing to have a cult following, but once the show is done, I don't see it staying alive much long after other than a few movies every once in a while. Sailor Moon on the other hand has just recently been remade into a live action tv series, and it still has its musical going strong to this day. It's a living franchise that's already hit it's 10 year anniversary.

The closest thing to Gundam (which has been runing since 1979) that I can think of is Transformers (since 1984), it's been running non-stop in some way, shape, or form for 20 years in Japan. Of course there are shows that have been running longer than Gundam like Lupin III (since 1971) or Doraemon (since 1973).

I think what Animefan16 means is what do we predict will run as long as Gundam with new content. I believe Doraemon and Detective Conan are still running, but in terms of spin-off after spin-off, I can't really say there is anything quite like Gundam.

I'm not just talking about spin-offs. It could also be the original show and that it would still be running for many more years.

A new Yu-gi-oh series is supposed to premiere in Japan this fall with a new cast. It's called Yu-gi-oh Genex. I hope funi gets this instead of 4kids.

Ah. Well then it'd most definately be Doraemon, or maybe... Astro Boy?

Sorry, I'm not too familiar with those older titles that originated before my birth Anime smile + sweatdrop.

I forgot about Astroboy. Yeah that's a possibility, they make a new series every 20 years. Also in the US, they're making a live-aciton movie.

Don't forget Macross (1982) and Cyborg 009 who predates just about everything.

You must remember that there are two reasons why Gundam has been so popular for so long:

1) Universal Century
2) Everything that came after

This may be a bold statement, but I think Mobile Fighter G Gundam secured the franchise's place in immortality, as it was the opening of the floodgates, so to speak.

In this day and age of instant gratis, I don't think there'll be any more shows that'll last more than 10-15 years or so. Right now, Tenchi Muyo may be the best chance we have.

Nothing.

In terms of the way Gundam feels and the amount of spin-off's, I dont think there will be a next "Gundam"

Besides, Gundam is still running so there can't be 2 Gundams!
