Initial D is one of my favorite anime shows, and I don't even really like street racing.
Anyway, people keep saying the tricked-out version, which I haven't seen, sucks because they changed some things (For example, someone at the IMDB whined because of really small things like name changes [Takumi to Tak, Itsuki to Iggy] and a theme song change). So, my question is, have you seen the tricked out version (you said you saw the entire first stage in subs, but that doesn't mean anything)? And if so, did you like it? Was it really different from the original or just the few things I mentioned? I haven't seen it in "tricked out" mode, but I doubt it would bother me, as long as they don't screw up the plot.

changing names is not a small thing
well, i personally dont really like the show. why? well, whats the point of a show about racing if you dont have realistic damage? its like a bloody video game. a car flips over or runs into a guard rail and only got sctarches.
but the arcade is kick @$$

Well Initial D is a good show. I really think so because I happen to like Street Racing (my friend is a racer and she race down mountains too).
As for the trick out version, the hip hop they used works okay. I'm not saying it doesn't work and I don't see why everyone is so angry about it. If they are angry about the edit, then there's the classic version which has the music that's true to the originals. It's no biggy. I'm not really a complainer-type so I can live with a couple of change.
I would only recommend though to people who are at least interested in japanese car.

i like first stage. there's something awesome about some guy with a crappy car just beating the crap out of all the other cars.
realistic? nah. but fun to watch. i gained a new appreciation for old boxy cars. s13, baby =P
i like battle stage... they remix all the race scenes with good graphics and less talking.
disappointed with 2nd and 3rd... mostly 2nd though, which rubbed off on the 3rd...

I think it's one damn good anime. Thats because its not only about racing but there is also drama and romance. Also the suspense that builds up before each race makes me jump out of my chair. Since you watched first stage hope you nail stage 2(sequel) where Takumi puts spoon engine in this "86", the movie and fourth stange(project D).
Also while off topic I think Initial D the arcade game is just awsome. My all time favorite arcade game after "crisis zone".
Peace

Initial D is a good show, it's just that Tokyopop decided to "mess up" the property abit all due to a "certain hollywood movie" and to save face when things didn't pan out, they just dumped it onto the American Fandom and ignored the protests and complaints.

I'm talking about if you've seen the tricked-out version of the DVD, but nevermind.

The tricked out version is terrible. The music is changed the names are changed and the plot is largely rewritten in some points. The tricked out version is more like an american interpretation of initial d rather than the original. Also the stupid tricked out video with new camera tricks and stuff is just bad. I showed my friend episode 1 in both languages and he likes anime in english. He literally said fudge this were watching the original version because it's not written for retards.

Seem to me that you have a vendetta against all dubs in every post you make. Calm down, it's not that bad. People love to overact and make a big scene over nothing.
There's 2 version, the classic version for the anal hardcore fans and the trick out version for people who don't care if the name is change and whine about it.
