Seriously, this game looks absolutely gorgeous. I am SO asking my parents to get me a PS4 for my birthday just so I can play this!

Excited for the game, but kind of surprised that they seem to have brought back a bunch of VA's from past Tales games for the English dub. Like, Ray Chase, Erica Lindbeck, Christine Marie Cabanos, and Bryce Papenbrook? Not that I mind it, they sound good, but it feels like there are so many talented VA's in the business now that they shouldn't need to bring back old ones.

Also kind of amazed this is apparently Yoshitsugu Matsuoka's first Tales game.

They're probably trying to experiment with giving them different types of characters to voice. Or maybe other actors are busy with other things so they had to make do with what they have. COVID restrictions are still a thing, after all. Who knows?

My sense is it's been so long since the last Tales game they felt they could start "fresh" casting wise even if they had to use VA's that were in prominent roles in past games.

I wonder if Wendee Lee is still involved with the dub.

I still think it's going to be an absolute trash Tales of game, though I hope I'm wrong.
The way they emphasize the "a new beginning" and a shift in target audience to more western RPG fans, while people enjoy Tales of precicesly because of its japanese RPG elements, makes me question the quality of the game not only as a Tales of game, but also a bit in general.
Again, I do hope I'm wrong as I would like to get a good new Tales of game.

::looks at headline:: why list PS/XBOX and ignore the PC release?

Honestly a Tales game or JRPG in general getting an launch Steam Release is a far bigger deal than being on Sony or MS's little toys.

I think this is just overwhelmingly ridiculous how dare the developer try to so something new? Listen, there are so many tales games already in that style. They may have gotten stale. Look at Dragon Quest. XI was there most successful game in the west recently, and it received rave reviews. It also very much more inspired by Western RPGs. People act like if Japan tries to do something western it is erasing what made a tales game? I'm sorry, but Anime tropes and graphics does nor make tales. Its the excellent writing, combat, and party. If this game has that, then I am sure Tales will be just fine.

It's especially silly considering Japanese RPGs have taken inspiration from the West since the beginning (and Western RPGs in turn have been inspired by JRPGs). The whole genre can trace its roots back to stuff like Ultima and Wizardry.

Weird. You acknowledge some of the last Tales games weren't good, yet say that them trying something different could mean another bad game....despite you knowing almost nothing about how the game plays?

Weird.

A Tales game releasing in steam is hardly a bigger deal, so stop being a delusional PC fanboy. The game will probably sell most in consoles too.

I'm unsure what you mean by Dragon Quest XI being inspired by western RPGs. It's a very traditional Dragon Quest game and am struggling to see how it's any different than its predecessors. I would call it the quintessential Japanese RPG of the generation.

That's generally been a big point of criticism in the past. Final Fantasy XIII's strict linearity was inspired by Call of Duty and corridor shooters because the developers through linear stories were what people wanted. Star Ocean: Integrity of Faithlessness was also inspired by western game design of there being virtually no cutscenes and all story being told through in-game dialog and events like a lot of those cinematic western games. While I enjoyed both games overall, they were certainly controversial in their respective fandoms and definitely not my favorite in their franchises. That being said, I'm not sure what's exactly the western influence in Arise is yet. I'll admit it does look a bit off from the typical Tales game and looks more like an action game from that trailer, but I don't think we've seen any actual gameplay yet; unless the western influence is it's suppose to be it being dark, edgy, fantasy like Game of Thrones or something. I shall reserve judgement until I know more.

Tales of Arise Has a Tough Balancing Act to Perform - Tales of Arise is looking to revitalize the Tales franchise by balancing the appeal for both Japanese and Western audiences alike.

Quote:
Comprised of a team with both Tales veterans as well as passionate newcomers, Tales of Arise aims to secure the franchise's future both domestically in Japan as well as overseas... Although Tales has become popular in the West ever since Tales of Symphonia arrived in 2004, the series rarely feels as big as it does in Japan. The Tales games often have limited to no marketing in the West and the localization quality has dipped over the years.

Unfortunately, this means that even when games like Tales of Berseria receive critical acclaim, they often fall short of their true potential due to awkward translations or uneven side stories... Alongside the heavily criticized Tales of Zestiria, the Tales franchise has felt like it has fallen short over the past few years, and Bandai Namco has finally decided to make a change with Tales of Arise.

With the development of Tales of Arise, the team has stated that its focus will be appealing to both the Japanese and international audiences alike.

Unlike previous entries in the series, Tales of Arise is being developed in Unreal Engine 4 which will allow for better graphics while retaining a familiar visual style through custom shaders... It looks like a phenomenal upgrade in terms of its graphics department, focusing on a more realised world than the anime inspirations of past entries such as Tales of Vesperia. The combat also looks the cleanest it's ever been, with some fast-paced encounters showing it of in all its glory.

The game is even said to be getting some next-gen enhancements. According to the Famitsu report, Xbox Series X|S players can expect to have two modes to choose from. Performance Priority Mode ensures the game runs at a stable 60FPS, whilst Graphics Priority Mode pushes the game to reach a 4K resolution.

If you're worried about the change in visual direction then don't worry, those anime sequences you know and love will return with studio Ufotable (notably known for working on series' such as Demon Slayer) bringing it to life, Famitsu also confirmed. It's even said that the length of the anime scenes will be "one of the longest in the history of the series."

I'm very curious how well this will do in Japan considering the Switch dominates there, and they're not making this new generation "Tales of" title for that platform. I guess Bandai Namco could do another re-release of an old popular "Tales of" title to placate Switch owners. Or do what Capcom did with Monster Hunter and make a new "Tales of" title specifically for the Switch.

Weird.

I never said that the last Tales of games were bad, quite the opposite in fact I enjoyed Zestiria and Berseria.

As El Hermano already said...
How is DQ 11 inspired by western RPG? It's a classic Dragon Quest game and that's precisely why it is such a good game, people would riot in Japan if it wasn't.

And while the graphics may not really matter some anime tropes do, because it is a part of the party. With a more western direction, the writing could also change.
I'm not saying it will be bad, I just think it will and I do hope I'm wrong.

Im looking forward to it, but I agree that it has its work cut out for it in order to regain some traction. Bersaria was good, but everything else since Vespiria has been meh. It also doesn't help that the Trails series is eating its lunch right now and is firing on all cylinders.
