You can even tell naturally passive or active characters by whether their ears droop down or point up.

Wow, I missed this point when watching earlier volumes, but now that I think about it, this is true.

Is that quality really a negative? I'd call that attention to detail; it would be out of place for a passive person to have perky ears. Otherwise, I agree with pretty much everything else you said.

You know, it's a very ticklish feeling to read a review on an anime that had me awestruck from beginning to end and basically see the characters described as boring stereotypes. I could argue that the characters are given far more depth in the original game version, but the truth is this is series made me fall in love with its characters before I even knew there was a game version. I guess Utawareru Mono just pushed all the right buttons for me, and I've never been one to be turned off by those many clichés reviewers like to nitpick anyway.

Admittedly, though, this part of the story was my least favourite. The best days of Utawareru Mono were the ones before Kunnekamun got involved. I certainly don't expect a very good review of the grand finale either, as the ending of the series is rushed and the back-story of the vital character Mutsumi is almost entirely left out.

I love the omake video on this DVD. These little character pieces are really great.

I don't know about the animation quality though since very little moves (less motion than Gonzo's panned Trinity Blood and Speed Grapher in my opinion) in either the foreground or the background. Most of the major motion is done by 3D.

The transfer on the other hand is spectacular. ADV has done a top notch job with the video being standard definition reference quality. I'm not surprised that this series is slated for a Blu-ray release since it looks like (from my guess) they already have it mastered in HD.

I love the over the top melodrama in this series. There were a couple of moments on volume 5 which were on par with Escaflowne in that department.
